Tributes paid to rail tragedy dad

A man killed in an accident on a level crossing was a father of three young boys.

Former pub landlord Paul Harrop died after being hit by a train on the Lyminster crossing at Littlehampton on December 30, causing the line to be shut for several hours.

His sons have released tributes tied to balloons in the 42-year-old’s memory.

Mr Harrop’s wife Sarah, speaking from her home in Barnham, near Arundel, said her husband was a wonderful man and father.

She said: “There was an accident but at the moment we do not know what caused it. He was a very kind man.

"He had previously been a pub landlord and was well known in the community.

“He did a lot of charity work and ran quiz nights where he raised money for causes including Chestnut Tree House and homelessness charities.”

Scores of people have left tributes on a Facebook group dedicated to Mr Harrop, who previously ran The George pub in Eartham.

Sharon Hall said: “He was a lovely guy.”

Terry Salter added: “Paul you will be sadly missed. You were a great mate and I really enjoyed working with you and having a laugh about football.”

Caroline Walton said: “Paul, so tragic and very sad. My thoughts are with your family, Sarah and your boys who have lost a great dad.

“He’s at peace now with the angels.”

Inspector Gary Ancell, of British Transport Police, said Mr Harrop’s death was being treated as a “tragic accident” and that an inquest would be held.
