Hundreds of young musicians will make their voices heard this weekend over another target for budget cuts.

Children aged between 11 and 18 are staging a mass busking protest at Churchill Square from 2pm on Saturday.

More than 3,000 people have already signed a petition against proposals to withdraw £107,000 from the Brighton and Hove music service as part of council budget cuts.

Currently 2,500 children across the city use the service each week, including 500 families from low-income backgrounds.

According to protesters the council’s planned cuts, along with reductions in central Government grant, will leave the service with less than half its current funding.

Campaigner Beth Randall, a parent and French horn player with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, said: “This is not just about providing music lessons to privileged children.

"Many of those who use the service are on low incomes and it provides an alternative youth service, bringing together and motivating young people from diverse backgrounds and parts of the city in a positive way.”
