Strange thefts from Sussex railway stations

A ticket machine, salmon and Champagne were among the items stolen from railway stations in Sussex last year.

Sweets, meat and metres of cabling were also taken.

Stations including Brighton, Gatwick, Goring in Worthing, Haywards Heath, Fishbourne, Billingshurst, Horsham, Crawley, St Leonards, Fishbourne and Horsham were targeted.

In just a few days last June, Brighton railway station was targeted numerous times.

Thieves took ten jars of coffee and bottles of Champagne – but dropped them as they were fleeing.

Brighton railway station suffered more thefts than any other station in Sussex.

A train was also targeted with thieves making off with branded Southern headrests.

Pomegranate juice and a rug was taken from a shop at Hove station and sandwiches from a shop in Haywards Heath station.

A rail replacement bus stop sign was stolen from West St Leonards train station.

But metal was also taken. On five occasions his happened in Horsham.

The crime spree, between January and October 2011, the most recent period available, was revealed following a Freedom of Information request.

Inspector Gary Ancell, of British Transport Police, said: "We reduced theft of passenger property by 13% last year, but we are not complacent and know there is always more that we can do.

"The reduction in theft was good news, but economics is having its effect.”

Why is this strange? People have been taking traffic cones for years and nobody ever said that was strange.
