Pink Floyd star's wife helps rescue man from sea
3:50pm Friday 27th January 2012 in News By Anna Roberts , Crime reporter
The wife of Pink Floyd star Dave Gilmour was among a group of people to rescue a drowning man from the sea.
The man was spotted flailing in the sea near the Kingsway, Hove.
Yesterday (January 26) Polly Samson, who lives nearby in Hove, referred to the incident on Twitter.
Eyewitnesses said the group joined Sussex Police officers in dragging the man from the waves.
Yesterday Samson posted to a friend: “I could have done with your manly chest just now as pulled [a] drowning man from sea.”
She described how the ambulance and police were there and a “brave man with earrings” stripped and jumped in.
Samson described his “body washing to and fro through the shingle”.
She said she was left “shaken” by it.
Ray Morrow, who witnessed the incident, said: “I have just seen a body dragged from the sea near the King Alfred Leisure Centre. He was first wrapped in a silver sheet and given some sort of medical assistance.
“The man was alive and was then handcuffed and taken away by the police."
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “A man was seen to go into water at Kingsway, Hove, at 1.25pm on Wednesday.
“He was pulled from the water by police officers and taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. He was arrested and sectioned.”
A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman said: “A man in his 40s was pulled from the sea and treated after nearly drowning off Kingsway, Hove. The man was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital for further treatment.”
Mark Bell, from Brighton Lifeboats, said they were called to the incident but stood down en route.
