A 27-year-old man has died suddenly just months before he was due to marry.

Daniel Mason was walking in the Sussex Downs with his wife-to-be Mary Ross when he became short of breath and felt chest pains.

He was whisked to the Royal Sussex County Hospital but he died from a pulmonary embolism hours later.

Former BHASVIC and University of Sussex graduate Daniel had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at 11 months old and had already defied doctors’ expectations.

“He touched so many people’s lives and so many people loved him. He gave time to everyone”.

Just months before he died he was part of a charity team that rowed across the Channel from Dover to France in five hours in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the King’s College Hospital adult CF unit.

Yesterday (January 26) Miss Ross and Mr Mason’s mother Carol Mason paid tribute to the design engineer who worked in Brighton.

Mrs Mason, of Hurstpierpoint, said: “Daniel lead a very full life despite living with cystic fibrosis and I want other parents who have babies born with CF to realise that.”

Miss Ross, who lived with Mr Mason in Burgess Hill, said: “I was so proud when he rowed across the Channel in September last year with his friends – they raised over £10,000.

“We thought he would pull through.

“He touched so many people’s lives and so many people loved him. He gave time to everyone”.

The couple got engaged in August last year and were due to marry in April.

People can donate money to two charities in Mr Mason’s memory.

The Cystic Fibrosis Holiday Fund allowed him to travel to America and be best man at his friend’s wedding by paying for his insurance.

Remap brings together various volunteers to design and make gadgets to help solve problems that disabled people may have. Mr Mason worked with the charity, utilising his engineering mind.

Sounds like a man who made the very most of his life, in spite of his illness.
What a shame.
