Councillors unanimously showed their support behind the £420 million plans for the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital today (January 27).
There were concerns made about the impact the development would have on traffic and surrounding areas, but members agreed the benefits far outweighed any negatives.
The plans will involve pulling down and replacing the old Barry and Jubilee Buildings and will include a helipad and underground car park.
Brighton and Sussex University NHS Trust chief executive Duncan Selbie said: “Thankfully the city has given the green light to modernise the hospital and we can move forward.
“Anyone who has had a loved one or has been in the Barry Building as a patient themselves knows how much this is needed.”
Councillor Bob Carden said: “This is an enormously important development and we should be very proud of the application that we have had before us.”
Councillor Carol Theobald said the helipad was vital. She added: “It will simply save lives. Just saving one life makes it worth it.”
