Tesco plans new store in Shoreham

Up to 25 jobs could be created at a new store.

Tesco plans to open an Express convenience food store on the site of the former Green Jacket pub in Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “Not only is this an excellent opportunity to regenerate this former pub site and bring it back to use but we look forward to investing in the area, creating new jobs, serving local people and becoming part of the community.”

Soon we will have no pubs left as everything is against them at the moment.Tesco and other major stores must also be having an impact on the local corner shop and dont provide the same local service WHENS IT GOING TO END?

I would shop there, they have a good standard of food and service and they dont take out of date eggs and put them in boxes with longer expiry dates, also they dont sell fake booze, and it will create more local jobs, also you get a receipt for the money you have spent, also they pay their staff fairly, and they do not employ illegals.

hang on this is the same tescos that wrote a public letter to the paper saying it wasnt intrested in the site?
SO theres a bloody great tescos store along the road, but it needs to put another store in to compete with the smaller stores along that road, with a car park right by a busy junction with two schools nearby as well. Theyre not regenerating the pub site and bringing it back to use it was a working pub till they took the site over. The company has already taken the heart out of the local shopping community and they think theyre doing us a favour?

which shops in the area do that at the moment then, none to my knowledge. this is the same company with such a glowing reputation thats its had its licence taken away in various areas of sussex for selling booze to children under age on a regular basis

Disgusting idea, if they get away with it. What a waste of space and how awful opposite such a lovely park.
What the owner of the pub needs to do is to sell to a good quality "chain" of pub/restaurants, so it can become a place for families to go, especially being so close to the park.
If planning has not been granted and I cannot see any on the Adur Council Planning web site, then it needs to be challenged by all local residents!!!!!

Utterly ridiculous, how about giving the poor little retailers a chance. This is simply nothing but pure overkill! Isn't the Holmbush Store big enough?

The site obviously doesn't work as a pub. I've lost count of the number of "under new management" signs I've seen in the past five years. No wonder Punch wants rid of it.

It'll be interesting to see if it works as a shop. Shame it's a Tesco, what with it being very close to Holmbush. Perhaps one of the other chains might have provided a bit of much needed competition.

Traffic is going to be the biggest issue. Huge lorries deliver to these sites, and there's a school very close by. Hopefully restrictions will be put on the store to prevent deliveries happening around school start/lunch/close times. That is, assuming Tesco takes any notice of the rules placed upon it - that's not an area where it has a great record.

I dont like Tesco Expresses. Seem to attract a lot of Chavs. Prefer an M&S really but you cant have everything.

I'm not sure why Tesco seems to attract such venom when many of the other supermarket chains are doing the same. As Sevensisters says - in Brighton Sainsbury's seem to open up everywhere, and their convenience stores are just that with lots of booze and ready meals but not much else. The Co-Op seems to be expanding rapidly but it's a pity their supply system and staff don't seem to know what's going on or what customers want. The M&S Food at Hollingbury is very much aimed at what will sell there with pretty much just ready food and drink but little customer service.

The Green Jacket, like many pubs, does seem to have been struggling for some years and, yes, it does seem rather close to Holmbush for another Tesco, but I would rather something was there than just a boarded up site. Where one boarded up site exists it usually isn't long before more businesses close because people don't go to the area.

Am I being paranoid, or do I see a pattern here? Pub chains making life difficult, so that successive managers quit, and then the asset-stripping owners say that the pubs are obviously not viable. Oh dear; the next step is for the supermarket owners to wait until there are not enough pubs, and start opening new ones in their large car-parks. Bring on the men in white coats!

Punch Taverns have no regard for their tenants or customers. Property speculation is their answer to our returning recession. Remember the well patronised "Half Brick" in Worthing, lovely pub, good food and live music ....... Bob Brooks was a good landlord, but hounded out with unfair rent rises and crazy tied-house stock prices. Surprise! Surprise! Now being developed into a block of flats.

The blood suckers will drain the very life blood out of the community. Boycot now or repent at leisure..l

I'm afraid you are being paranoid, the chains aren't making it difficult so they can sell the property once the tenants have failed. I didn't know the Greenjackets had gone, it must have only just gone i'm sure there were people in it last week. Drinking is being driven out of fashion by cost, health advice and cheap booze in supermarkets. Who is going to sit in a large pub on their own spending £5 on a crap sandwich when you can get 4 cans for £3 and sit in the comfort of your own home. It's very sad but the pubs of yesteryear have got no chance in todays spendthrift times. I'd suggest to the locals if you don't want the Tesco there protest, and if they still open, don't shop there. They are losing ground to Sainsbury all the time.

The truth is that(in my opinion) once Punch Taverns gain control of a pub one of two things happens,it turns into a grotty Chav watering hole or gets sold off to developers after being bought fo a song in the first place.

here-here Thermo !
I agree with you.

Tesco are a complete bunch of money grabbing and unscroupulous arseholes.
I have friends who deal with them and supply to Tescos. They are not nice people to supply to and I personally know people that work there on the floor and as managers. They ARE NOT a nice firm to work for!

Punch Taverns have had this pub for over 15 years since they acquired it from Bass!
There are too many people on here that don’t know what they are talking about.
Mick and Marion ran that place really well and it had a good reputation.
Unfortunately when Marion moved out to the new landlord some 4ish years ago it went downhill due to Paul the new landlord.
Since then it has never re-gained it reputation due to a string of useless and inept landlords and managers.

"here ends the story thus far"

TESCOS please go away, we do not want your low-grade products, poor customer service and the chavy customers you seem to attract!

Regards
Slightly peeed off Stephen from Shoreham.
