A fire broke out in a basement flat after a tea light was left at the side of a bath.
Firefighters were called to the the flat in Landsowne Place, Hove, after neighbours reported smelling smoke.
Six people were evacuated from the building while crews dealt with the blaze, which started shortly before 11.30pm last night.
Watch manager Stuart Black from Hove fire station said: “We would advise people to always make sure tea lights are placed in a fireproof saucer or container and they should never be left alone when lit.”
The fire badly damaged the bathroom and the rest of the flat suffered smoke damage.
