Valentine's Day transport service protest in Brighton

A union has organised a Valentine’s Day protest over a “massacre” of a transport service.

The Government has announced that it is looking at closing the 39 regional Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency centres in a bid to save £28 million.

The move would see 23 people working at the agency’s centre in Trafalgar Place, Brighton, at risk of losing their jobs.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union has now announced a protest will take place outside the building between 12.30pm and 1.30pm tomorrow (Tuesday, February 14).

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “We will not sit back and watch while jobs and highly-prized public services are stripped away.“The closure plans are not based on what the people who use these services say they want and need, but on a politically motivated desire to unpick our public services.”

It read to me as a politically motivated desire to save £28 million.

This is a great shame - public sector offices mainly seem to based in london or the north.

The Student Loan Company has over a thousand employees in Scotland - a country whose students don't even pay fees!! Bring those jobs south now!

I remember Simon Kirby was calling for more governement jobs to be moved to Brighton - I wonder if he has a comment on this?

Having had the pleasure of queuing for 40 minutes to have the most simple task transacted and finding it almost impossible to park in the first instance, I am far from surprised that the closure is being progressed.

Any business that traded on a similar basis would expect the same.

Lets migrate more of the processes to on-line asap!

It's a union, what did you expect. They still think it's 1973

I am surprised at how placid those working are about the looming redundancies, they were a bit cross with the MPs fiddled their expenses.
They seemed to understand that the greedy bankers hid the bad loans.

Now they are bearing the brunt of the pay back their is barely a murmour from them.

Don't they care whatis being done to their own children?

Have you worked it out yet?

Stories are often uploaded to the website the evening before publication of the actual hard-copy newspaper. If you were reading the paper when it was published, rather than the website, it would be correct.

I understand that the counter service wasn't materially affected during the protest hour, as there is usually a maximum of 3 customer facing staff providing service over that time.

It does beg the question as to what the other 20 staff actually do?

Any correction to the above, and or clarification appreciated!
