Burglars wheeled a safe the size of a washing machine down a street, police believe.
Detectives are trying to trace witnesses who saw the suspects with the safe in Warwick Street, Worthing, on Thursday night.
Two shops in South Street were broken into at about 10.40pm.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Detectives would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw up to three people wheeling a white washing machine-sized object along Warwick Street."
Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101, quoting serial 209 of February 10.
