Update: Two lanes of A27 still closed

Update: Two lanes of the A27 are still closed.

This is so Highways Agency staff can repair the central reservation after a lorry crash at 12.35pm today.

The crash occurred on the A27 westbound between teh A23 and Falmer turnoffs.

It is not believed anyone was injured in the crash but there are big queues and people are advised to avoid the area.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to the A27 between Falmer and Hollingbury at 12.35pm after a lorry and an MG convertible car had collided on the westbound carriageway.

"The collision forced the lorry into the central reservation and debris was scattered across the eastbound carriageway, striking an eastbound Ford Mondeo saloon and causing it slight damage.

"The driver of the lorry, who comes from Swindon, and the woman driving the MG and her passenger, were all taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with back and wrist injuries which were not initially assessed as serious.

"Another westbound car which was following the two vehicles which had collided in that carriageway, also collided with the reservation but the driver was unhurt.

"The outer lanes of both carriageways remain closed while the Highway Agency carry out road repairs, and it is understood that traffic delays will continue into the rush hour.

"Emergency services worked together to ensure the casualties were treated and taken to safety, and the scene was examined for causes of the collision.

"All services appreciate that there have been substantial delays on the A27, and are grateful for the understanding of drivers. The scene was left with the Highways Agency by mid-afternoon."

Why are there so many accidents in this area? about time the local authorities looked at what's wrong with the junctions!

A27 (including junctions) isn't down to the local authorities; it's the Highways Agency.

Doubt you are a drive then Pitviper....There is NOTHING wrong with the junctions nor road (unlike the short run-on from Hurstpierpoint on the A23)...
I use this road as a sensible driver.....and I see the way idiots drive!

I am a driver and I regularly use the A27, coming off on the A270 and I frequently see near misses at this junction, there is something fundamentally wrong with this junction both sides or there wouldn't be accidents, it just can't be idiotic driving!

Fact: 95% of accidents are caused by driver error.

Driving standards today are pretty woeful and there is an arrogant, 'give-way-for-no-one
' attitude that manifests itself in the statistics of accidents and deaths on the roads on an almost daily basis.

True but I find that this method of driving works for me! By a bigger vehicle and try it!

Seems like driver attitudes are very similar to people on here who jump all over other peoples comments !
It's all "I'm right, you're wrong" attack attack attack !
My view of it is that it will always be a black spot due to there being two junctions close together.

I've said this before - ex-Highways Agency - there is little wrong with this road, if anything. I'd bet anyone £100 this crash was caused by driver error. As someone said, most accidents are caused by driver error.

It's SO easy to blame the government, and no government gets everything right, but fewer and fewer people drive to the conditions.

At the Highways Agency, we had many example of bad driving, including cases you wouldn't believe.

Thousands of people drive on the A27 without accidents, so it HAS to be driver behaviour.

When I was growing up, lorry drivers were knights of the rolad - people you looked up to. Not any more.

Traffic is always bad here; you should see it at rush hour or when a football match is on! Utterly stupid!!

Hmmm, not sure the road has ever been closed on a matchday at Falmer, but carry on. Wouldn't want facts to get in the way of a good story...

I try to avoid that area all of the time.
