Women's minister called to Brighton and Hove to see impact of cuts on women

Come and see the impact of cuts on women for yourself.

That is the challenge set by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Green minority administration.

The Greens wrote to Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone to ask that she visit the city and talk to charitable groups.

It came after the local authority passed a notice of motion on the topic at full council.

Councillor Steph Powell, who represents Queen’s Park ward, said: “It’s clear that women are going to be the worst off from the Government’s decisions and this is shown in their own analysis.

“Women make up two thirds of the public sector workforce, and often have low-paid and part-time jobs.

“They are being hammered from all sides, thanks to public sector job cuts, pension changes, welfare cuts, tax credit changes, housing funding, and changes to legal aid.

“We invited her to come down to Brighton and Hove and see the wonderful work of frontline organisations such as Brighton Women’s Centre in my ward and Rise, both of whom are seeing a marked increase in women needing help as a result of this Government’s decisions.”

Sorry I must be dim, isn't it the council that is making women redundant, and don't the council have a poor redundancy package, say compared with American Express which doesn't have strong unions. Maybe they need to put their own house in order

I don't get it - why is it more important if women are affected than if men are affected?

Because as far as this councillor obviously thinks - men dont' matter.

From the article: 'Women make up two thirds of the public sector workforce'. Hence the motion.

But that's just hypocritical. The council is gonna cut jobs as well, they should put their business in order before passing useless motions. As if the Tories are gonna care about their opinion.

By the way, don't you love when The Argus uses the phrase 'Green minority administration'? It's so delightfully passive-aggressive.

I normally avoid commenting on here as it seems more of a forum for anonymous people to pour virtiol onto fellow commentators, but having read this article I have to ask: are any of our Green councillors actually bothered about Brighton and Hove? They all seem more interested in using the city as a springboard for their political careers, playing the populist politics of an election campaign when they should be busy governing!!!
