Breastfeeding gets support

Breastfeeding mothers have received political support in their fight to be free to nurse their children in public.

Dozens of parents attended a “flash mob” at the Clock Tower in central Brighton in December after mum Claire Jones-Hughes spoke publicly of receiving complaints about breasfeeding in a café.

Green Brighton and Hove city councillor Ruth Buckley met Ms Jones-Hughes to discuss ways the local authority can prevent prejudice directed towards feeding mothers in public.

It comes as a report showed the city had higher than average take-up rates of breastfeeding during a child’s first six weeks.

Coun Buckley said: “We are proud of breastfeeding take-up rates in Brighton and Hove, boosted by the ‘Breast is best’ campaign.

“However it’s unacceptable that any nursing mother should be subjected to such aggressive behaviour at such a sensitive time in their life.

“Brighton and Hove is known as a tolerant, inclusive community and we should continue working to challenge all forms of narrow-mindedness.”

Coun Buckley urged mothers to use the two dedicated advisors and 30 volunteer support workers in the city.

mmm first it will cry to be fed, after they have fed it, it will need changing. Mustn't be allowed to forget they have a kid.

If done discreetly you wouldn't know they were feeding at all. My wife fed all 3 of our children in public without the slightest complaint or even sideways glance.

It's not exactly rocket surgery.

Being going on successfully for ten's of thousands of years (unless you are a Christian of course) and typically works really well. However, one extrovert in a cafe in Brighton, upsets a few people and its national news.

How strange!

Oh...and he certainly does 'return'. You love the breastfeeding don't you? Do you know me by the way? I get the feeling you do...you sound like you do.
Regards
Claire Jones-Hughes :-)

What an objectionable piece of PR by the Green Party.

I saw someone goign to the toilet in the street late on Saturday night and wish to start a campain to champion their rights to carry on doing it. Not really. Mind you my Mum breast fed me and my sister and brother without all this fuss which let's face it started with ONE remark from ONE member of the public. Get a life!

oh hark at you ms double barrelled surname!! your comment is indeed 'very strange'! Now I know a very good counsellor who can deal with your anger issues.

all bladeboy was saying was that Breastfeeding is normal, and not many find it a problem, indeed your harping on about will make it a problem and not bring about a new understanding, acceptance.

For absolute clarity and regardless of any commercial arrangements I find the story strange, the attempts to raise the profile of what I consider to be a non issue very strange and the comments posted earlier in response to my expressed view even stranger.
