Commercial flights could soon be touching down more often at “Brighton City Airport”.
Bosses at Shoreham Airport have confirmed they are looking to open up the runway to private operators for more chartered flights to UK and European destinations.
“Add-on” services set for take-off will increase traffic at the site near the River Adur and cash in on the Olympics, bringing extra economical benefits to the county.
They firm is looking to serve six, ten and 12-seat planes.
If successful, managers have said the airport – dubbed Brighton City Airport – could see scheduled flights from airlines and larger operators in the coming years.
Ric Belfield, Shoreham Airport’s general manager, said: “These services will help market the airport both in the UK and internationally and bring in new customers.
"We also expect an increasing number of high net worth passengers to use the airport and spend money in the surrounding area.”
The airport does currently offer some commercial services as well as its successful flying schools but these are limited due to the lack of executive “add-on” services, such as catering, aircraft maintenance and help booking onward transport and hotels.
Bosses believe establishing KA Executive Handling to its private jet and helicopter passengers will allow it to tap into a wider market.
Steve Blight, founder of KA Executive Handling, said: “Essentially we bring extra comforts to private passengers that use the airport.”
Mr Blight said he expects to see “significant business” this year, especially during the Olympic Games when a no-fly zone over London airports means Shoreham can be used by private passengers.
He added: “Being located on the south coast Shoreham is the perfect place for planes that have come from the north of England, bound for Paris or Geneva to refuel."
The firm said it had already created five new jobs and hoped to hire another three.

"Brighton City Airport"
Why do the Argus make up these silly headlines and surely if they wanted to be accurate it would be Brighton & HOVE city Airport.............
Maybe people could land there when they are on the way to the Palace pier or some other attraction that only exists in this rag

Brighton City Airport! It is SHOREHAM AIRPORT, always has been and always should be. Poor old Shoreham. Adur Council taken over by Worthing and now the Airport taken over by Brighton. I’m surprised that Brighton doesn't want the Harbour as well!!! A thought, expansion of SHOREHAM Airport was tried some years ago but the runway isn't long enough. At that time it was said that it could never be extended due to the 'Green Belt' between Shoreham and Lancing. Now that that 'Green Belt' is being developed, The Football Training Ground to the West, the tip, oops sorry 'Golf Course' to the North and the rumours of housing and industrial does this mean that they will also expand the runway as well. Conspiracy theories from a grumpy old man maybe, but the older I get the more cynical I get and the more suspicious of our elected Councillors and even more so of the real power behind the councils, the non-elected highly over paid and under worked senior officials. The local stationers must be rapidly selling out of large brown envelopes. Anyhow, I thought Brighton Council was Green. Aren’t the gloriously looney Greens against the expansion of Air Travel?

We spent literally hundreds of years not wanting to be associated with Brighton, and then in the mid nineties our Borough Council was abolished and we were forced into an administrative union with Brighton and are now know as the ridiculous 'city of Brighton and Hove'! Hence the oft-heard phrase 'Hove, actually'!

Hove Actually wrote:Exactly. Yet another example of Brighton's arrogance and delusions of grandeur thinking of itself as a/the 'city'. We see it here all the time e.g. the Brighton Marathon, VisitBrighton (tourist board for Brighton AND Hove), buses being labelled as going to Brighton city centre....
