Airport ready for passenger numbers to soar

Commercial flights could soon be touching down more often at “Brighton City Airport”.

Bosses at Shoreham Airport have confirmed they are looking to open up the runway to private operators for more chartered flights to UK and European destinations.

“Add-on” services set for take-off will increase traffic at the site near the River Adur and cash in on the Olympics, bringing extra economical benefits to the county.

They firm is looking to serve six, ten and 12-seat planes.

If successful, managers have said the airport – dubbed Brighton City Airport – could see scheduled flights from airlines and larger operators in the coming years.

Ric Belfield, Shoreham Airport’s general manager, said: “These services will help market the airport both in the UK and internationally and bring in new customers.

"We also expect an increasing number of high net worth passengers to use the airport and spend money in the surrounding area.”

The airport does currently offer some commercial services as well as its successful flying schools but these are limited due to the lack of executive “add-on” services, such as catering, aircraft maintenance and help booking onward transport and hotels.

Bosses believe establishing KA Executive Handling to its private jet and helicopter passengers will allow it to tap into a wider market.

Steve Blight, founder of KA Executive Handling, said: “Essentially we bring extra comforts to private passengers that use the airport.”

Mr Blight said he expects to see “significant business” this year, especially during the Olympic Games when a no-fly zone over London airports means Shoreham can be used by private passengers.

He added: “Being located on the south coast Shoreham is the perfect place for planes that have come from the north of England, bound for Paris or Geneva to refuel."

The firm said it had already created five new jobs and hoped to hire another three.

"Brighton City Airport"

Why do the Argus make up these silly headlines and surely if they wanted to be accurate it would be Brighton & HOVE city Airport.............

Maybe people could land there when they are on the way to the Palace pier or some other attraction that only exists in this rag

Sear: to char, scorch, or burn the surface of with or as if with a hot instrument.
Soar: as in flying.
Might be a good idea when you have come up with a clever headline to also check that you have the correct spelling!

I think it was previously officially known as "Brighton, Hove and Worthing Municipal Airport" a while back and is now "Shoreham (Brighton city) Airport", however it will always just be "Shoreham Airport" to the majority of people.

Brighton City Airport! It is SHOREHAM AIRPORT, always has been and always should be.

Poor old Shoreham. Adur Council taken over by Worthing and now the Airport taken over by Brighton. I’m surprised that Brighton doesn't want the Harbour as well!!!

A thought, expansion of SHOREHAM Airport was tried some years ago but the runway isn't long enough. At that time it was said that it could never be extended due to the 'Green Belt' between Shoreham and Lancing. Now that that 'Green Belt' is being developed, The Football Training Ground to the West, the tip, oops sorry 'Golf Course' to the North and the rumours of housing and industrial does this mean that they will also expand the runway as well.

Conspiracy theories from a grumpy old man maybe, but the older I get the more cynical I get and the more suspicious of our elected Councillors and even more so of the real power behind the councils, the non-elected highly over paid and under worked senior officials.

The local stationers must be rapidly selling out of large brown envelopes.

Anyhow, I thought Brighton Council was Green. Aren’t the gloriously looney Greens against the expansion of Air Travel?

Probably the Argus was looking into the future and thinking what might Shoreham Airport be called in 20 years time? More to the point, will the Argus still be around then?

the terminal should be restored to its art deco splendour if it wishes to attract rich business men or any other passengers. the cafe could do with a makeover, could be a good little earner with the right management and authentic art deco look. it has a feel of old fashioned flying and could be charming and an alternative and real attraction from other bland airports. a great makeover would make it ideal for location filming and good quality functions and events.

"a great makeover would make it ideal for location filming".

Itg has been used as a "body" double for Croydon Airport in a number of Poirot episodes on TV.

Caroline Lucas will love this; it'll mean that on the rare occasions that she actually visits the city that elected her, she'll be able to fly back to her beloved Brussels EU spiritual home without going via London

It is not Brighton City - it is SHOREHAM, always and forever. We don't want to be associated with Btn - end of story!!!

Well said! Imagine how Hove feels! We spent literally hundreds of years not wanting to be associated with Brighton, and then in the mid nineties our Borough Council was abolished and we were forced into an administrative union with Brighton and are now know as the ridiculous 'city of Brighton and Hove'! Hence the oft-heard phrase 'Hove, actually'!

Exactly. Yet another example of Brighton's arrogance and delusions of grandeur thinking of itself as a/the 'city'. We see it here all the time e.g. the Brighton Marathon, VisitBrighton (tourist board for Brighton AND Hove), buses being labelled as going to Brighton city centre....

The words 'Brighton' and 'city' should never be used without reference to Hove as the only 'city' is Brighton & Hove.

Therefore you are absolutely right that if they are going to rename Shoreham airport, it should be 'Brighton & Hove city airport'!

Or it will join the long list of other municipal airports in the South of England branded as being part of London.
London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton & London Southend for starters.
My money's on
"London Brighton & Hove City at Shoreham Airport"
Can't wait to see the 3 letter international code for that one!

they have now corrected the word in the headline from SEAR to SORE. i personally thought SEAR more fitting, because there is so much at STEAK.

to solve the problem of the long name why not just call it london west pier airport? (LWPA).
i know, its a brilliant suggestion -thanks! but i have to be modest and admit that i took my inspiration from the new name for humberside airport - soon to be renamed "London Humber Bridge" (LHB)

lol. Let's rename London Gatwick to Crawley International, and London Heathrow to Hounslow International!

While we're at it, we can rename other airport such as Glasgow to Paisley International, and Stansted to Harlow International. lol

Here's a task for you all - which international airports are actually physically located within the administrative/civic boundaries of the city/town it is named after?

The first one that springs to mind is Liverpool John Lennon (physically located in Liverpool).

bremen international airport ist very central in the city itself - just 12 minutes by tram from the central railway station! others that spring to mind are Jerez, Gibraltar, Lyon, Geneva, Kiev, and Pisa.
