Council tax contributions to policing in Sussex will be frozen in the coming year.
Sussex Police Authority yesterday (February 16) agreed to keep the policing element of the annual rates for residents in the county the same level for 2012/13.
This means the authority will receive a one-off Government grant worth the equivalent of a 2.5% increase.
Steve Waight, chairman of Sussex Police Authority, said: “I am pleased that as an authority we have been able to agree that council taxpayers in Sussex will not have to face a rise for policing the county.
“We have carefully considered the financial position that we are in and have looked at the consequences for future years and we are confident that we are in a good position to freeze the council tax without causing problems for the future.”
Rejection bid
Ben Duncan, Brighton and Hove City Council’s representative on the authority, requested an amendment to the budget which would see the authority not take the grant.
However, this was batted away by a majority of other members.
It was the last time the police authority would set a budget as it is preparing to move to the new system of an elected Police and Crime Commissioner.
Elections for the role will take place on November 15.
Coun Waight said: “We have therefore, as ever, thought carefully about the future implications of the budget that we set and what this means for the people of Sussex.
“There were some mixed views over whether or not we should accept the Government’s grant offer and was not a decision taken lightly, but I do believe it is the right one for Sussex.”

So the police are capable of coming up with a solution to keep their increase to zero but the looney Greens can't ? Time to rid the city of these amateur politicians. Shame on Ben Duncan attempting to hit the tax payer in the pocket AGAIN.

Thankfully the police had more sense. As for standing for election - no thanks - I'll just vote for either Labour or the Tories and get professional councillors back in to power. Let's remember, it was a Green councillor in a council meeting three weeks ago that was complaining the he was being asked "awkward questions". Oh diddums - pathetic - what did he expect when in power ? They also don't like democracy - a majority of the city want them to take the government grant but their arrogance prevents them from doing so. Time to put Duncan, Kitcat and co where they belong - on the dole queue.
