Occupy Brighton's softly-softly stance

The Occupy Brighton camp in Victoria Gardens last year The Occupy Brighton camp in Victoria Gardens last year

The brains behind a protest group are planning a fresh approach to their city campaign.

Occupy Brighton has said it take a “softer” approach and will not be setting up a camp in Brighton and Hove.

Tents were located in Victoria Gardens, Brighton between the end of October and mid-December.

They only came down following a heavy storm and a blaze on site which led to a firefighter being allegedly assaulted.

Council members and protesters also explained how members of Brighton and Hove’s street community were infiltrating the site, which was meant to be alcohol-free, and this was causing problems.

A public meeting to discuss the future of Occupy Brighton will take place at The Academy of Creative Training in Rock Place, Kemp Town, Brighton, between 7pm and 9pm on Saturday, February 18.

Malcolm Cook, from Brighton, said he hoped people would be sympathetic to their aims.

Successful camp

He added that the campsite in the town centre – while controversial – had been successful as it had brought attention to their aims.

He said: “At one point I was on the campsite and I had a UN representative on one side of me and a banker on the other side. That is because we had made an impact.

“But now we are not planning to set up again but we are having meetings.

“We are getting together some venues to have meetings together.

“We want people to come along and find out what is going on in Occupy locally and nationally.

“We will have meetings but it will be a very Occupy way of doing it. We will have pop-up tents in village fetes with jam and scones.

“Whereas we want people to know about Occupy we understand not everyone wants to camp.

“So we are inviting people to come in and have a cup of tea and learn about our aims – without getting wet and cold.”

For the millionth time - what exactly are the aims of these people?

All I've heard so far is wishy-washy student nonsense.

So - what, exactly, do these people want?

Did this really say "the brains a protest group". Really beggars belief that !

For the first time I might actually be prepared to learn some more about the aims of these people as they are not forcing their ideals on me, or disrespecting my rights to access public ground.

That said, as I suspect they are yet to define what their aims are and therefore have not created a road-map for delivery it could be a long drawn out process.

To pave the way for this a significant amount of apology is required if the good people of Brighton are to listen to them, never mind embrace them and a great start point would be if these people created so tangibility re their physical being. i.e. who, what and why would be great starters.

Who knows, 20 years from now they may have some support. However, if they default back to type, remain anonymous etc it will most likely never even begin.

Remember the arson and common assault issues!

Grammar would be a nice start.

I'm afraid this campsite had the exact same problems as the first one in Old Steine: lots of good intentions but an appalling lack of direction. If they want to raise awareness they should focus on the problems of the country, not just some abstract concepts. There are plenty of things worth protesting for (does anybody still think the cuts are gonna solve anything?), and the fact nobody knows who they are and what they want is just proof of how out of touch they are.

They should camp on the Albion grounds. Now, that would give them visibility.

trouble there sre so many people pitching up in Brighton, half the streets have some old van owned by some crusty freeloader, a few tents is hardly going to make any difference

Time for a redistribution of the wealth. Let's put the 99% at least on par with the 1%.

As Caroline Lucas and her husband are in the 1% bracket it would be an act of outstanding hypocrisy if she were to support Occupy without committing to at least a 50% cut in her standard of living. Her multi millionaire lifestyle must be a bit of an embarassment to the local councillors who have supported the Occupy movement. Still one rule for us another for them and all that.

You may find that you generate more interest and therefore possibly support if you communicate some tangible and short term outcomes you are aiming to achieve.

I appreciate from many previous comments in other threads that you may be trying to change the world, however the world is very dynamic and the end destination may never be achievable; what may be achieveable though are some short term goals.

You must by now be clear on at least some of these after several months of alcohol and drug abuse and backside scratching, so why not be specific and share them with us. Ideally ensuring they are achievable without changes to legislation, then get support and deliver them.

If your goals are much bigger and therefore less likely to be achieved in the medium term (3-5 years) then the route has to be via Parliament (UK) and your energy should be placed into outing the minority parties that add no value and have been caught out recently in full view of the public, e.g. Green and Labour

In a head to head vote with either of the above and even without you having a stated manifesto, you will get my vote!

The world (well some of it, well at least me and one or two other posters on here) is watching you with a certain degree of interest and plenty of scepticism.

I am old labour, and I believe in honest toil and collective bargaining and democracy. Otherwise you end up like the summer riots that was more to do with greed than a movement about life chances of the young

Labour supports lowest common denominator thinking and perpetuates acceptance of sustained disadvantage.

Time to strive for better things for everyone, rather than hanging onto the bad things from the past

As long as they're definitely not setting up in Preston Park and disrupting our lives - which is what they were saying for ages - then they are a complete irrelevance to everyone. Give them their little meetings as it'll keep them happy anyway!

Occupy Brighton sounds like squatters, having had first hand experience, by having my home raided and sullied before it was sold and now having to live outside of town because of the fear of it happening again. Let them speak and let us know exactly what their aims are, will they?

I think you may have a point, the level of disrespect and arrogance shown in the first squat (the only one in the world to fail apparently) beggars belief and I suspect if its the same people they will simply activate their self destruct mechanism and probably then rapidly be the first to fail twice. That said their approach, which involves holding meetings in various venues, rather than squatting, sounds quite innocuous and I do like Brightonlad's suggestion for the West Pier.

Only time will tell I guess and there is probably more to lose than win for this bunch. maybe a bit too early to start laughing out loud?

I'd like to know what this academy of creative training is all about. If it just means setting up a stink hole in the middle of our pubic spaces in the vague hope of generating some sympathy and annoying the taxpayers who fund it then I wouldn't give it much chance of success.
There's a already perfectly good academy of get a blasted job out there only some people seem to think that's beneath them and they can't be bothered to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in.
If they deserved my sympathy I'd freely give it but this lot are plain bone idle. Who'd employ them anyway with their attitude?

It is a disgrace that these tree hugging ne'er do wells are allowed to get away with it. Stop their benefits and charge them with trespassing and obstruction. I know it will not stop the likes of the challenged Bladesboy Returns from supporting them and taking Red Cross Parcels down to them on his push bike but it would be a start. This Town is a cesspit.
