A girl aged around seven years old was among a gang that set dogs on a flock of sheep, it is claimed.

The savage attack happened on Sunday (February 19) afternoon at Balsdean Farm near Rottingdean.

One pregnant ewe was so badly mauled that farmer Martin Carr had to shoot it to end its suffering.

Police are hunting two men in connection with the incident.

According to the two walkers who called police, the men were accompanied by two teenage boys and a dark-haired young girl.

One dog was described as black and white with a scarred face while the other was white.

After a time they saw them come back down the hill with the two dogs who were both covered in blood

Farmer Martin Carr

Martin said: “The group were seen walking into my sheep fields with the two Staffordshire bull terriers.

“After a time they saw them come back down the hill with the two dogs who were both covered in blood.”

When Martin got the call from police, he raced to his field to see what damage had been done.

Huddled in a corner, most of his terrified sheep had escaped injury – but one female had suffered horrific wounds.

Martin said: “The dogs had obviously bitten her in the face.

"She was heavily pregnant so she wouldn’t have been able to run fast enough to escape.

“She was struggling to survive but there was clearly no hope for her. It was so sad.”

Martin said those responsible for the attack were “less than human”.

What a shame he didn't catch them in the act - he would have been perfectly within his rights to shoot the dogs!

I had a similar incident Sunday night/Monday morning, where a dog attacked one of my pet sheep. The dog owners didnt have the decency to report it..Poor sheeps face is savagely torn, but he has survived so far.Makes me furious that irresponsible people can let dogs be out of control around livestock.People need to be aware of what their fluffy cute pet dogs are capable of,and to just walk away leaving an animal covered in blood, injured and in shock is disgraceful. This was in the foredown tower area portslade.

What people and pet owners forget is, despite domestication, animals WILL revert back to their natural and wild instincts if the circumstances allow them to, this story being a perfect example. It's in their genes and, if nothing else, they are acting entirely naturally and instinctively.

Humans are at fault for trying to control animals, Nature and the planet. And they will always bite back, both figuratively and literally.

Don't blame the dogs! It's the brainless morons who train dogs to attack who are the culprits. Better to shoot the scum that own the dogs, then send them to a better home!

Good point. I think this article and the resultant posts were in danger of prompting a "Pistols/handbags at dawn" scenario!

well, I was up for tearing Greeg2's face off but he seems to have buggered off. . good riddance too! I do hate web trolls.. probably some loser with nothing better to do who's trying to shock and annoy! clearly it worked! as for bendy buses I hear that London is losing them in favour of the old 'routemaster' style buses with a conductor!

A copy of my facebook post immediately after the attack:
"I make no apologies for the following:
This sheep was still alive, after an apparently deliberate attack.
I regularly stick my arm, elbows deep into sheep which are trying to abort foetuses which have been dead for 2-3 weeks or more (edit: to save the sheep); those foetuses are bloated and rotten and often come out in seperate pieces as i rip them apart in the womb; this I do without hesitation, fear or retching.
But to find this ewe and to watch her black battered tongue pant in the tattered remnants of her mouth, and to see her wind pipe flutter as she tries to regain her breath after this attack. To watch her weakly try to keep her destroyed head up in the air to prevent her jawbone and shattered teeth scratching on the earth as she tries to survive; that takes me to my limit.
And to know as I take photos of her for evidence that this was a deliberate act, and that the perpatraters had left her suffering like this deliberatley. Should they deserve the name human?"
The Argus shied away from the photos and that text.

After reading the last comment from Martin(the Farmer),i was reduced to tears. That poor sheep suffered horrendsly, all i can say is,"i hope they catch the SCUM that did this, and throw away the key! and eventually Martin, will be able to get those horrible scenes out of his mind.

I have also offered the photos of my sheep after the dog attack on him...thank god his injuries are not as severe as Martins ewe and it is unbelievable that anyone could deliberately cause such suffering....people assume sheep are stupid(and they are to a point)but they feel pain, distress and fear like all creatures..i truly hope they get the people responsible and the the rules for dog owners are enforced..it broke my heart to find my sheep in that state, his face was also torn and shredded, but luckily his jaw and tongue are unaffected...good luck martin
