The new leader of Brighton and Hove City Council’s ruling Green party has vowed to work “tirelessly” for the city.

From May 4, the new Green convenor for Brighton and Hove City Council will be Councillor Jason Kitcat, the current cabinet member for finance.

Coun Kitcat was the only declared candidate to succeed Coun Bill Randall as leader of the Green minority administration, overseeing a budget of more than £700 million.

As Green leader he will be joined by current licensing committee chairwoman Lizzie Deane as deputy convenor for internal relations.

Regeneration and planning cabinet member Amy Kennedy and planning committee chairman Phelim MacCafferty will job-share as deputy convenor for external relations.

The successful candidates are likely to be confirmed as leader and deputy leaders of the council to serve year-long terms from May.

'Fairer city'

All candidates were elected by secret ballot with single transferable votes. An electoral college system gave equal weight to the votes of Brighton and Hove Green Party and the Green group of councillors.

The result, revealed yesterday (March 4), comes just days after the Greens’ policy to raise council tax by 3.5% collapsed under the weight of Conservative and Labour opposition.

Coun Kitcat said: “I would like to thank the party for their support.

“I look forward to working with our new deputies to deliver a greener, fairer city.

“I will work tirelessly for the people of Brighton and Hove with all those who share the hope of a better future.”

The new Green leader, deputy leaders and mayor will be proposed for formal election at the city’s annual council meeting on Thursday, May 17.

Present council leader Coun Randall and deputy leaders Ian Davey and Amy Kennedy will step down on that day, having served their year in post.

Coun Randall has been selected by the Greens to serve from then for a year as mayor.
