Man dead after Worthing flat fire

A 62-year-old man has died after flames ripped through his home.

About thirty firefighters are still at the scene in Gratwicke Road, Worthing after they were called at about 5.10am this morning.

A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed a man, who is believed to be the single occupant of a first floor flat, has died at the scene.

A police statement said: "Both that address and houses on either side were temporarily evacuated. The body of a man was found in the first floor flat.

This afternoon, police confirmed the fire was started accidentally.

"It is believed to be that of the occupant who lived alone there, and preliminary indications are that the fire started in that flat."

A spokesman added: "Next of kin of the dead man are in the course of being informed and it is hoped to release his identity tomorrow, Tuesday 20 March.

"The coroner's officer is continuing her enquiries and a postmortem will take place on Thursday 22 March."
