57,000 people go to Brighton foodies event

More than 57,000 foodies went along to this year's Big Sussex Market.

Visitors from as far afield as France, Spain and Italy went along to the event, which is part of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival Spring Harvest.

There were a range of events on Good Friday and Saturday.

Festival director Nick Mosley said: "Whilst the Big Sussex Market is always the heart of the festival, the immense efforts of the team to create an amazing free Live Food Show and Children's Food Festival really paid off.

“Brighton is now firmly established as one of the UK's biggest and most important local food events.

"With 83% of the stalls at the Big Sussex Market from Sussex - and the remainder from our surrounding counties - the food festival continues to offer local growers, producers and restaurants a critical platform to promote their businesses whilst also allowing local people and visitors the chance to sample the very best of Sussex.

"The festival is run entirely by a team of volunteers who have given immense amounts of time and resource to ensure its success. We're looking to have further conversations with the city council and other stakeholders to ensure the ongoing viability of the festival for this September and the years to come."

Just a suggestion for next time: inform local groups in a position to put the word out to as many people as possible through their websites and by email.

Someone tweeted this to saveHOVE but not saying from WHERE and was it a two-bit event with a couple of stalls or an event as big as Vegfest was?

No advertising? It costs a lot of money to buy space at these things! And reading a report of something that is finished when never told it was going to happen is just plain irritating.

I doubt these statistics are reliable! For me it was the same food, same stalls, same people, same events programme. Variety is the spice of life and this very tired and self indulgent festival seriously lacks seasoning!!

Daniel – thanks for pointing out how self-indulgent I was being when I gave up 2-days holiday to voluntarily run the Live Food Show. Do let me know if you ever do anything for the City? Unlike you I like to support local events and get involved - far harder work than criticising from afar.
