A 14-year-old boy appeared in court today charged with the manslaughter of Connor Saunders.

The teenager, from Brighton, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of killing the talented 19-year-old footballer who died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on Sunday.

The youth appeared at Brighton Youth Court this afternoon. He was bailed into the care of Brighton and Hove City Council. He is due to return to court on April 24, before a committal hearing on May 15.

He must stay indoors between 6pm and 6am and not enter Brighton and Hove, Woodingdean, Rottingdean or Peacehaven.

Police believe Connor suffered head injuries after an argument between two groups in the street outside Tesco Express in Rottingdean on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination found that Connor, of Downsway, Woodingdean, died from injuries consistent with trauma to the head.

Two other boys, aged 13 and 14, who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been bailed until May 8.
