Sex website cop quits after drugs test

A traffic cop who posted pictures of himself on a sex website has resigned from the force after failing a drugs test.

James Appi, who was a police constable based at Chichester Road Policing Unit, resigned from Sussex Police last month after testing positive for cannabis following a urine test.

The 45-year-old had been set to go before a gross misconduct hearing for failing the drugs test but it is thought he resigned before a date for the hearing had been set.

Mr Appi was caught out posting photos of himself in his uniform on a sex website in 2009 but was allowed to keep his job.

The traffic cop posted pictures showing him outside Number 10 Downing Street and posing next to Barack Obama’s presidential limousine while on duty.

He also reportedly left messages saying he fantasised about having sex on his police motorcycle.

The father-of-two had also used the website to boast that he had worked with firearms teams doing protection work for VIPs including Princess Diana who he claimed was his favourite.

His use of the sex website was revealed after a woman contacted a national newspaper to report he had suggested he dreamed of having sex on his motorcycle.

Just a month after his actions were revealed in The Argus in October 2009 he returned to the site adultfriendfinder.com to complain about his private life being exposed in the press. He had been a governor at Funtington Primary School in West Ashling near Chichester but stepped down from the role soon after revelations about his personal life surfaced three years ago.

A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed that PC Appi had been requested to give a urine sample which then proved positive for cannabis.

He resigned on March 5 before he was due to attend a gross misconduct hearing.
