As for the green man being moved. It also makes a beeping noise when the light changes to green so the fact that it may be obscured by static pedestrians is not as restrictive to safety as it could be.
Just as a general observation, far too many just wander across the road/s as the fancy takes them.

If a driver hits a pedestrian, rightly or wrongly it is ALWAYS the drivers fault. The driver is responsible.

Sorry abbey73 but that little green man which was once very visible has now been moved to just above the button to push. This is often blocked by people waiting to cross the road. Why they moved it is beyond me. It's confusing for many people, though we do have to take more responsibility for crossing busy roads.
I hate crossing the road and not seeing whether the man is green of red and yes in town it is even often impossible to see them before you cross when it is crowded.
How did these replacements ever get past and do we know if there are more accidents as a result? Probably too early to say but I feel sure that in time the hazard will be reflected in the statistics.

I had a long protracted argument with the council about the stupidity of these new style lights - and they insisted they are much safer and have stats to prove it....when I challenged them again - they couldn't even be bothered to write back. Most of them have had the beeping noises removed so when you are half way across the road you can't be sure if the light has changed. What a stupid system. I have never seen these lights used anywhere else...and I'm sure the dangers will be shown in the stats eventually....

All the traffic signals are plainly geared to facilitate the movement of wheeled traffic - in fact that is the case throughout the country.
In the case of Brighton it starts, for visitors, immediately outside the station where they are met by a confusing, and potentially dangerous, crossing.
