That entire junction is a total and utter nightmare for pedestrians.
All the traffic signals are plainly geared to facilitate the movement of wheeled traffic - in fact that is the case throughout the country.
In the case of Brighton it starts, for visitors, immediately outside the station where they are met by a confusing, and potentially dangerous, crossing.

Whilst I'm very sorry for this gentleman, and hope he recovers from his injuries, I disagree that the above mentioned junction is a 'nightmare' for pedestrians - you push the button, wait for the little man to turn green, then cross the road. Where's the difficulty in that? The problems lie in pedestrians not waiting for a safe signal, and whilst I'm not suggesting that the gentleman did that (I wasn't there, so wouldn't like to comment on his actions), I've seen hundreds of people do this on a daily basis.

Sorry abbey73 but that little green man which was once very visible has now been moved to just above the button to push. This is often blocked by people waiting to cross the road. Why they moved it is beyond me. It's confusing for many people, though we do have to take more responsibility for crossing busy roads.

What junction are we talking about? There is no such junction between North Street and The Old Steine because Castle Square is between the two. Did this incident happen at the junction of Castle Square and The Old Steine, near the RBS building?

My thoughts exactly Cash Cow ...

As for the green man being moved. It also makes a beeping noise when the light changes to green so the fact that it may be obscured by static pedestrians is not as restrictive to safety as it could be.

Just as a general observation, far too many just wander across the road/s as the fancy takes them.

If a driver hits a pedestrian, rightly or wrongly it is ALWAYS the drivers fault. The driver is responsible.

When does a driver hit a pedestrian rightly? Just out of interest.

This accident happened two days ago. Where is the follow-up from the Argus. They must by now know what actually happened & how the pedestrian is.

Yes totally agree. Why is this? I think crossing the road with these new crossings is very hazardous. Why are they not visible across the road (by turning the top one around instead of facing the same way as the lower one).

I hate crossing the road and not seeing whether the man is green of red and yes in town it is even often impossible to see them before you cross when it is crowded.

How did these replacements ever get past and do we know if there are more accidents as a result? Probably too early to say but I feel sure that in time the hazard will be reflected in the statistics.

Totally agree. These new green man light systems with the crossing signal no longer in front of you are being installed all round the city. I had a long protracted argument with the council about the stupidity of these new style lights - and they insisted they are much safer and have stats to prove it....when I challenged them again - they couldn't even be bothered to write back. Most of them have had the beeping noises removed so when you are half way across the road you can't be sure if the light has changed. What a stupid system. I have never seen these lights used anywhere else...and I'm sure the dangers will be shown in the stats eventually....
