Lack of funds scuppers White Night

A major cultural event will not go ahead this year.

White Night is an all-night cultural festival which takes place on the last Saturday in October.

But Brighton and Hove Arts and Creative Industries Commission has decided to take a year off from running it.

The event no longer receives the European Union Interreg funding which provided half of the £150,000 needed to put it on.

Last year the Arts Council turned down a funding application for £50,000.

Jackie Lythell, chair of the commission, said the decision not to go ahead this year was because of lack of funding and also because of the large number of other activities and events taking place in the Olympic and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year.

She said: “The event has been an enormous success over the last four years, but we need to take stock, to take a year out and take time to develop different ways of supporting it and making it happen.

“We are already in discus- sions with prospective sponsors for 2013 and open to any new ideas.”

that's a shame....what are all the nocturnal benefit claimants going to do now apart from half of them being off their nut on drink/drugs?

Very good news about this White Night not going ahead. Yet another total waste of time and money.

Good to see the comments section is cheery as always.

Ah yes... arts and cultural events simply have no worth. Enjoyment and enrichment are SUCH as waste of time and money.

I assume these commenters have no TV, since nothing on it has any worth.

Instead of "White Night" how about "Blackout on the Beach"?

It could include a city-wide tour to see the Loughborough graduates of 1999 extreme performance art of sleeping off bootleg wine and skunk in various well-lit skips in the road. Sliding then inexorably towards the "Crouching jager-bomb victim, hidden vomit of West Street" installation where pointillistic patterns akin to Seurat's finest are reproduced on the pavement each night with vodka, kebab meat, and brown lettuce. Finally taking in a Pissarro on the seafront?

With people now relying on food parcels if it did go ahead it would have the ring of Marie Antoinette pleasuring herself and coming out with let them eat cake

It also generated way more than £150000 in revenue for businesses in B&H. So that will be a few more food parcels required.

I have visited Brighton twice for white nights and each time have seen no more drunkeness etc than is usual in a city on a saturday night. There are so many things going on that there is no time to get drunk if you are truly there for White night,i hope this is not the end.

Maybe the council can fund it, they seem to have found £14 million to give away recently.

So successful that the people who go are not prepared to pay for it!

People who moan about this event are either very bored with their vapid lives or rabid right-wingers who think are Art is just the other half of Garfunkel. If you don't like it move to Eastbourne, you'll fit right in.

Those who consistently moan about benefit scroungers etc. seem to have too much time on their hands... No work to do?

White Night is a fantastic event for everyone - it makes me proud to live in Brighton that such events are put on. And by the way: how do you know that no one would pay for admission? I would, and I'm sure many others, too.

Its hard for events these days it costs so much to put them on but people wont even part with £1,pride proved this even though it got so popular preston park became unsafe and it lost money as no one would put in collection buckets. Now it has to be a paying event which hopefully this year will be a sucess now that buisness people are running it.
