Winter vomiting bug hits Worthing wards

Two hospital wards have been closed to new admissions after an outbreak of a winter vomiting bug.

The wards in Worthing Hospital are closed to new inpatient admissions with potential hospital visitors being asked to stay away if they have suffered from diarrhoea or vomiting.

Visitors who are currently unwell, or have been in the past 48 hours, are urged to postpone as they can be infectious two days after symptoms have gone. Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said they particularly want to discourage visits by children at this time and that visitors who do come into hospital should strictly observe the hand hygiene measures by washing their hands thoroughly.

On the radio this morning, a professor was being interviewed about the use of hand gels. He said a person should their hands with soap and water! The alcohol in gels causes more damage to hands as it drys the natural oils, leading to dermatitis in some patients. Although he was pressed, he did not answer the direct question as to whether the hand gels were useless, but his silence was indicative that they are! Perhaps the use of wet wipes, if one is away from soap and water, then hand gels is the answer!
