Pupil seriously injured after being attacked in school

A 15-year-old school boy suffered a bleed to his brain and a fractured skull after being attacked by a fellow pupil.

The assault took place in his school, Uckfield Community Technology College in Downview College, Uckfield, at 1.30pm on Monday (21).

The victim, from Hartfield, was seriously injured after being punched in the face and falling to the ground.

The assault took place in a sports area of the school but the two boys involved were not playing sports.

Another boy, a 15-year-old from Uckfield, has been arrested on suspicion of grevious bodily harm and bailed.

A Sussex Police statement said: “Police are investigating an incident in which a pupil received serious head injuries.

“The boy is conscious and recovering in hospital from a fractured skull following an altercation with another boy.

“Police were called to the school after a report that a boy had been hit in the face and had fallen to the ground during an altercation with another 15-year old boy.

“He was initially taken to Pembury Hospital near Tunbridge Wells, and was then transferred to Kings College Hospital in South London, with serious head injuries which are not assessed as life threatening.”

Detective Inspector Rob Morland added: "This appears to be an isolated incident not involving any other pupils and we are working with the school staff to help reassure any pupils or families who may be concerned. We are still establishing what happened and any background and the enquiry is at an early stage.”

i hope the school do the right thing and expel the assailant, if found guilty. how could the school allow this to happen? were there no staff on duty? had there been bad blood between them? hope he fully recovers

I don't know how many times in the last week I have read in a statement from the Police this is an isolated incident. That might well be the case but these assaults are happening on a daily basis throughout the country

You need the full facts.
I got expelled from school for punching a boy three years older than me who had made my life miserable for years.
I broke his jaw in three places.
I am and have always been a peaceful person, but I had had enough.**** happens!

How many more young people have to suffer during their school day - the schools are there to protect our youngsters - i would love to hear from any other parents who have suffered through no fault of their own on behalf of their children - my son also was attacked and has had two operations because of that attack - this should never be allowed to happen!

Which one was the assailant?
No school can prevent a fight ever happening on their grounds. Of course there were staff on duty and I think we can safely assume they were not best mates.
Did you not go to school in the UK?

Yes. Who is to say which of these kids is at fault certainly not the Argus. Could have been self-defence or an attack.

Fights in the playground happen. Unfortunate and certainly not something to be encouraged. I would certainly deal very severely if any of my children were involved in anything like it. However the consequence wasn't something necessarily foreseen.
Demanding expulsion, especially without full knowledge of the facts is over reaction of the knee-jerking kind.

what would have happened if you had killed him? Your life, his life, ruined, over. I am not saying I don't understand the frustration you would have felt, I was bullied myself, but your point loses all validity when faced with the above dilemma.

Expel? I hope he doesn't get a criminal record, it was a show of 'power' that went badly. Stuff like this happens in life unfortunately, but neither does it happen regularly. The 'assailant' should be dealt with severely but even if he has ruined the other person's life, does that mean his should be ruined to? The aim of punishment in the UK is not retribution, it is and should always be whatever is best for society. By giving the kid a criminal record or expelling you are changing his life beyond repair and it is more likely to commit further crimes as he believes his life is already "f**ked". That would then be more of a punishment of society than the individual.

The lad who attacked my son now has a criminal record for life - and so he should - an unprovoked attack on my son whos now facing a 3rd operation - i think the thug has got away lightly compared to my son - who looks in the mirror each day and relives this attack!!!!

I was only a few metres away when this happened. I hope he recovers and we are all thinking of him at school. The boy got off lightly in my opinion, he is still in school!

Yes of course there were teachers on duty. But it's lunch time. They can't be watching everyone at once! They were very quick on the scene though.
