Simon Kirby calls on Royal Mail to 'Sort it Out'

An MP has called on the boss of Royal Mail to sort out postal services in his constituency “once and for all”.

Simon Kirby told the company’s chief executive, Moya Greene, his residents had “a right” to have their post delivered on time.

The MP for Brighton Kemptown also praised The Argus for the Sort It Out campaign which has piled pressure on Royal Mail managers to resolve the problems at the North Road delivery office.

Mr Kirby first wrote to Mrs Greene in March about “unacceptable”

delays after the company made cost-cutting changes to delivery routes, but complaints from customers continued.

Yesterday he said: “Residents of Kemp Town have a right to their post being delivered in a prompt manner. It is especially frustrating to hear of people who have been waiting for important documents which have arrived very late.”

Customer complaints about Royal Mail are continuing to be reported to The Argus.

Angry residents still waiting for late packages are backing our Sort It Out campaign to put pressure on bosses to tackle the delays.

Constance Anyon, a pensioner from Albert Road, is still waiting for her rent book three weeks after her landlord posted it.

The 80-year-old said: “It’s really worrying for me because it’s got all my financial details in there.

“I tried to call the Royal Mail but I couldn’t get hold of anyone. I have been here 40 years and I’ve never known it so bad.

“It’s so frustrating. These parcels are people’s property and I just don’t knowhowthey can get away with it.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We apologise to our customers who are experiencing delays.

“Extra staff have been put on duty in the office and postmen and women are continuing to work hard to ensure all mail is delivered on time.

“We would urge anyone with queries to contact our customer service department on 08457 740740. Our deaf and hard of hearing customers can use our Textphone 08456 000060.”

This is Royal Mail's modernisation plan. Machines capable of sequencing letters in order of delivery...but sadly take longer than manually sorting them. Hence the mail arrives in the particular delivery office later...so there is no point in the postman starting early..so his starting time is now later. keeping up so far...The postperson's delivery has been revised...and guess what ? It is considerably longer than it previously was ie an office say having 40 delivery rounds now condensed into 30. With all the will in the world a 'round' with maybe 600 + addresses may be impossible to complete within the duty time. Most postman I speak with are very customer focused guys who want to do right . There must be a hidden agenda with senior RM management/ government with talk of privatisation being mooted as happening as early as next spring. EU liberalisation of postal markets has not helped Royal Mail at all....it now seems to be the 'donkey' for carrying competitors mail under 'downstream access' agreements...ie bulk mailings that have been cherry picked by interlopers. Happy Days

I wondered how long it would be before the EU got the blame ...

how can a machine sort the round into delivery order? it can only be a 'suggested' order, as the actual postman may prefer a different, more useful way, as he/she knows the area they deliver in

The trouble is that the postman no longer knows the round as he has been moved away from the area he knew. I'm
getting mail for other addresses and, possibly, others are getting mail for my address.

Yesterday, Saturday, I received three deliveries - 5 parcels then 3 letters followed by a single letter with an hour or so between deliveries. What was even more unusual was that recently I haven't been getting any delivery on a Saturday.

It was about 18 months ago when I received a letter which was addressed to my road and my house number but a totally different postcode, Lewes actually ...
So getting it wrong isn't just something this machine does.

Presumably Simon Kirby wants to 'sort it out once and for all' by privatising it as his Party proposes - and that worked well with the railways didn't it.
