Tailbacks on A259 due to broken down lorry

Delays of up to an hour have been reported on a major coast road after a lorry broke down.

Vehicles heading in both directions have been affected after the incident on the A259 South Coast Road in Peacehaven at about 7.30am this morning.

Wintesses reported the lorry stopped on a bend in the road near the caravan park on the border of Newhaven and Peacehaven.

Two-mile tailbacks have been reported.

Roger French, managing director of Brighton and Hove Bus Company, said there were queues of about an hour in both directions.

He added: “Because it is on the bend traffic has built up in both directions.

“We were told the lorry would be removed by 10am but it is still there.

“I cannot believe it has taken so long to try and get things moving again.”

The huge eastbound tailback on the seafront section this morning was caused by 50 yards of the outside lane being coned off by the Grand and Centre - seemingly to provide a nice long parking space for two British Gas vans.
