Anti-arms demo triggers tank fears for newlyweds

Newlyweds travelling by tank could be confronted by anti-arms protestors.

A couple are planning to make their way from their civil ceremony at the Royal Pavilion to Shoreham Airport for the reception in a Bravo III tank on Monday.

But there are fears their journey could clash with planned demonstrations by anti-arms group Smash EDO, taking place in Brighton and Hove around the same time.

The couple will be chauffeured in the military vehicle which was used by the Army in Afghanistan.

Craig Douglas of Hire a Tank, in Portland Road, Hove, said: “The police called us out of the blue and said that they had a duty to keep the wedding going.

“The conversation went along the lines of, ‘There is an anti-war protest in the city and we want to be able to contain it’. I was a bit taken aback to be honest.

“I was just thinking about the clients and not wanting the tank to cause a rumpus.

“They said they wanted to contain the anti-war protesters and that they thought a tank in town might cause a bit of a rumpus.”

Mr Douglas described the tank as a “gimmick” often hired out for special occasions, stag and hen parties, but said he did not know this couple’s reasons for wanting the unusual choice of wedding car.

The Smash EDO protest takes place in the city on Monday as part of their Summer of Resistance.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “We have been kindly notified of the use of the tank as part of a civil ceremony at the Royal Pavilion and will assist with any traffic issues should they arise.”

How romantic! Nothing says "traditional wedding" like a tank.

Can't they use it on the protesters? Might make them think twice about the next one

Agreed. Nothing says "Get out of the way and crawl back under the stone you came from you unwashed little oik" like staring down the barrel of an advancing tank gun.

How dare you awful people tell such shameless lies about the little angels of smashedo?
You simply are too awful I really feel that the blessed saints of the church of smashedo who pet little kittens and sing orphans to sleep at night really really don't deserve the foul slander and libel that you are hurling at them. Whilst you are at your computers keying in hatred the angels of Edo are fearlessly hiding behind their masks ensuring the safety of this country by making sure we cannot defend ourselves, it really is all too much if you don't agree with everything I say I shall rush off to mater and ask her to wash your mouth out with soap, oh hang on we don't have any of that.....

Careful now Gaz ' Mr Censorship' Scott is scouring these very pages to look for comments he wants removed! Don't you go telling any tales now or he'll run to teacher!

I would kinda love the irony if a tank just ran over the SmashEDO mob!! Imagine the headline 'Useless wasters squished by war machine'.

Still, I'm sure SmashEDO aren't bothered one bit about spoiling someones wedding day.

Indeed, Smashedo, big men behind masks, small men in the real world. First to claim their rights, first to deny the same rights to others.

What kind of sick, twisted person wants to get married in a tank? I don't see the marriage lasting. And are the Argus commenters seriously thinking about using tanks against people? Isn't that the kind of thing Mr. Assad enjoys doing?

Accurate Anna Roberts strikes again. Just read this article in the rag, complete with a box optimistically headed TANK FACTS. As an ex infantry fv432 driver and commander I can't help but point out the glaring errors in her research.
The tank weighs 15 tons...
Close, 14.9 actually but the description lets it down, its an armoured personnel carrier, not a tank.
It has an 8 litre engine...
No it doesn't, 9 litre supercharged Rolls Royce.
It has a top speed of 40mph...
Again no, 30ish was all we could ever get out of ours.
Bravo111 was used as a forward command vehicle by the special forces. It still has the SAS regimental markings hidden inside...
There's no such thing as a bravo111, its a bog standard British Infantry AFV432 personnel carrier, built in the 60s and 70s for use in the perceived mechanised campaign agaainst the Soviets in Europe during the cold war. Slow, noisy, unreliable and about as stealthy and agile as a multi storey car park, the top boys wouldn't go anywhere near them for fear of getting blown up in the things let alone leave 'hidden markings'.

Facts Anna, start checking them before you print them.

Ah chill out will you.

I think it sounds like fun getting married in a tank! Why not?

Just lighten up.

What Assad is doing in Syria is disgusting and turns my stomach but a few SmashEDO protesters squashed on the pavement would be no big deal - lol!

Indeed well put, no we are not seriously considering using tanks against people. That would be ridiculous. Its an armoured personnel carrier we are considering using.
