Keith Pettit has been busy building a bonfire sculpture of Britannia ready for tonight’s beacon lighting ceremonies across the country.

The idea and design for the 40ft sculpture was led by designer and sculptor Mr Pettit from East Hoathly, near Uckfield.

On Monday, June 4 villagers will have a Chinese lantern parade to the site and light the sculpture that was made entirely from waste wood.

The Britannia bean will form part of the chain of beacons being lit across Sussex and the country to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

He has also created a blog where he describes his progress of building the sculpture.

I hope the Britannia figure design is intended as a bit of fun, and there are no anti-British motives behind it. We as a nation are going to need all the support we can get through the next few years, what with the Euro problems and instability in Africa. This comment is not intended as a political rant; just a general obsevation.

I suspect that if Mr Pettit were unpatriotic, he wouldn't be going to the trouble of building a beacon. He'd probably be ranting with the SmashEedeots in Hove instead.

Why hasn't Ditchling Beacon got a beacon?
