Brighton's Lewes Road speed camera to be switched back on

A speed camera on a busy dual carriageway which has been out of action for six months is to be turned back on.

The unit monitoring vehicles using the A270 Lewes Road in Brighton has been hooded since December 15 in preparation for extending the 30mph zone further along the dual carriageway.

The reduction in the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph between Natal Road and Moulsecoomb Way was part of a raft of changes introduced by Brighton and Hove City Council in January, A spokeswoman for the council said: “The camera will be uncovered in a couple of weeks in response to local community requests.

“In order to be fair to the motorist, enforcement will not commence immediately to give drivers the chance to adapt their driving behaviour accordingly.

“Once a short period of settling |in has gone by, we would look to enforce the camera, in line with |the rest of the safety cameras on the network.”

Not that this road needs to have the speed limit lowered to 30, but it would be more helpful to drivers if they used signs that were big enough to see!! Also bigger signs have a psychological affect of making people adhere more to the speed limit.

Meanwhile it's a 30mph crawl (once you've got through the temporary traffic lights and 15 minute queues while they install the 2m wide cycle lane) on the Old Shoreham Road all the way to Portslade... seriously, time to get rid of the Greens if we want to get this city moving again

"The camera will be uncovered in a couple of weeks in response to local community requests." How many people do you know who request speed cameras? Can these 'requestes' be produced under the freedom of information act?

I would like an investigation into the safety of the new bendy buses.
When they negotiate the Gyratory on the beand opposite thee Bear Pub their front end cuts across the outside lane and the rear end sweeps across the cycle lane on the inside.
I wonder if this is the real driver behind the proposal to close an inside land in each direction now we are told that the bus company has ordered lots of these buses which are just too big for the roads in the city.
The planners also seem to be oblivious that locals will just use ditchling or woodingdean and come down through the estates and Hanover to reach town avoiding the proposed single lane lewes road.
Silly, parochial planning.

You don't need signs, technically speaking.
If the road is in a built up area and lit by frequent street lights, then the limit is 30; unless otherwise stated on signs of a standard size.

Stick to the speed limit and you have nothing to worry/comment/compla
in about. Get used to it.

Seems a real shame when I can get almost 70 on this stretch.

I presume the speed limit was reduced because of several deaths between Watts building and Coldean Lane.
It is only half a mile more of limit which is approx 30 seconds more travel time!
Statistically a pedestrian hit by a car doing 30mph is much less likely to be seriously injured than at 40mph.

I should still make 60 before the camera and can then brake hard (and probably dangerously) to sneak past at 33 before accelerating and making 60 again. Shame though as 70 feels much better on this stretch of road and it won't be as environmentally friendly.

I really think the Council need to put bigger, more signs up and awareness letting drivers know it is now a 30mph. I used the road for the first time this year and flashed by the camera. I don't think many people would check if the council has changed the limited evrytime they used a road they have always known to be 40mph. I feel very let down by Brighton and Hove council.
