TWO teenage babysitters and a toddler were rescued from a burning Brighton flat last night.

At around 9pm, firefighters were called to the address in Clarence Square where a blaze had taken hold on the second floor.

They climbed up a ladder, smashed in the windows and rescued the two teenagers and the young child.

The fire, believed to have been started by candles, was put out after around half an hour.

It caused extensive damage to the lounge and kitchen of the flat.

The babysitters and four police officers had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

I take it this is the reason why Western Road was closed for a while last night. If the fire was on Clarence Sq, why was there the need to close Western Road both ways?
I'm glad everyone got out safely and with injuries not too serious.

Maybe there was a lot of smoke drifting over the road.

True. I read reports last night and was under the impression that the fire was actually on Western Road itself.

So anyway, Mrs Lincoln, what did you think of the play?

The property on fire has a front door on Clarence Sq, and windows over looking Western Road... so fire engines were at both sides.
Dealing with the fire from the Western Road side, and carrying out the 3 rescues and searching from the Clarence Sq side.

Well done to all.

That explains it. Perhaps The Argus could be a little clearer and add some detail into their report.

The fire was more on the Western Road side of the flat, with a lot of smoke covering the street for some time. The people were rescued from the Clarence Suare side, but flames were flying out over Western Road, that's why it was closed!
