Newhaven primary school hit by mystery illness

INFECTIOUS disease specialists have been called in after one in ten pupils at a Sussex primary school were struck down with a mystery illness.

Children have been told not to drink from water fountains and the Health Protection Agency was alerted after 17 pupils and four teachers fell ill at Meeching Valley Primary in Newhaven.

The school has been instructed to carry out a deep clean over the weekend to try to stop the illness spreading further.

The outbreak meant that the school’s summer fete – which was due to take place today – has had to be cancelled. The pupils’ sports day yesterday was also called off because it was felt advisable not to have a lot of visitors on the premises.

Parents of pupils at the school contacted The Argus to say how concerned they were.

One mother said: “First of all the school were not allowing the children to drink water out of the water fountains because they are concerned about it spreading.

“Then they came home with a letter saying there was nothing wrong with the water, but that the sports day and summer fete would be cancelled.

“It is worrying as there have been a lot of children sick.”

A spokesman for East Sussex County Council said: “Letters have gone home to parents and a text was sent to parents in the week telling them to have water bottles with them.

“For them it has been a large number of pupils – on Wednesday 17 out of 176.

“There have also been four members of staff off ill.

“They phoned the Health Protection Agency, who advised the school the best thing to do was have a deep clean.

“As a precaution they switched off the drinking fountains to stop the spread of infection.

“There is no suggestion that the water is contaminated.

“No one is seriously ill.”

sensible action taken by the school, these drinking fountains sound unhygenic to me,we always hope the children use them properly but there is always an element that they don't,i would stay clear.

Rubbish report - what are the symptoms? Also make sense of the statement 'as a precaution they switched off the drinking fountains to stop the spread of infection. There is no suggestion that the water is contaminated'. If the water is pure why turn it off?

as a parent who has a child who attends this school i have overheard mothers talking about there children having sickness and diarrhoea and still sending them to school without waiting the timescale needed which has not helped the situation.

Yes - too many parents regard schools as a child minding service. Somewhere to dump their kids whilst they go out to work.

Fretlessbass are you joking? Children 'have' to go to school.

Also parents contacting the argus website??? Why? And that will solve what?
If the water was contaminated at the school then so would half of newhavens households!! Imbasils....

Instead of going to the media support your school. I agree with dcsussex. Children have to go to school and parents have to go to work it is not a childminding service they are learning, what do you think children are doing at school fretlessbass??? People need to think about what they are saying before they spread mindless gossip that hasn't even been thought through. At least the school is doing something about it.

Exactly what I was thinking - the symptoms of this illness seem to be a mystery as well!!

If it is d+v, the kids need to be off for 48 hours after the last bout of sickness. That is is rule at our school and parents should be ashamed of themselves if they are sending their children into school whilst the child is ill. It is not fair on the child, the others and the teachers. Use your common sense, if you have any!

Excuse me when people phone to say their kid is sick they don't believe you and make you feel bad for not sending them take it you haven't rung schools to pull a sicki !

No I havent rung school to lie to them and, no, I havent taken mine out of school during term time to take them on holiday! I value education, but I happen to have enough common sense to keep my children off when they are sick! d+v spreads extremely quickly through schools and teachers dont thank those parents who send their kids in when they are throwing up left, right and centre. If your school makes you feel that bad about keeping your child off when they are sick, perhaps you are taking them out of school too often for 'phantom' illnesses or for mid-term holidays!

Parents are sending their children back to school to soon after they have had the bug and therefore spreading the infection. If the water supply was to blame then every teacher would have been affected along with loads more of the children and the nursery. The school is taking all the right precautions and is protecting the children from further outbreaks, parents need to do the same! It is not just this school having problems with this bug either, several other schools in the town are suffering from this bug but there parents haven't gone running to the press!! If parents take some responsibility and follow the 48hr rule then the problem wouldn't be so great!

Maybe this is to do with other factors like the incinerater or all the crap they burn and bring in this town but anything like that will be hushed up I only hope Norman Baker will investigate I mean for god sake these are children as in SERIOUS !!!

If it was the water supply then the surrounding households would be having the same problem. They have probably switched the drinking fountains off as some children put their mouths on it and therefore spread the germs. Germs spread more easily between children, I don't agree with the incinerator being here but I wouldn't of thought that it would cause this as we can see it from our house and we are not affected my child neither. This could happen in any school at least they are doing something about it. Going to the press is not helping, help your school rather than bring it down even more. Some people haven't even got a brain cell between them. Honestly!!!!

I'm not a member of staff at the school. It's pure common sense.
