Hove mother begs parents to immunise after baby's measles ordeal

Hove mother pleads for vaccinations after baby's measles ordeal Hove mother pleads for vaccinations after baby's measles ordeal

A mother whose eight-month-old baby contracted life-threatening measles has given a harrowing account of the illness – so other parents have their children vaccinated.

At the end of June, Delilah Griggs, who is too young to have received the MMR vaccination, contracted measles and subsequently pneumonia.

She was raced to hospital where her mother Amy Myall described how the youngster “screamed” as drips were fed into her and a tube was inserted into her stomach.

She said: “No parent should have to prepare themselves for the loss of a child when it could so easily have been prevented.”

Miss Myall lives near Blatchington Mill School in Nevill Avenue, Hove, where an average of two chil- dren a day are being diagnosed with measles. Since Easter 54 pupils at the school have developed the illness.

A Health Protection Agency spokeswoman urged parents in the city to have their children vaccinated.

By Wednesday there had been 247 cases of measles reported in Sussex this year, compared to 173 for the whole of last year.

Poor little mite. And all for something that could easily have been prevented if only others weren't so self-absorbed.

Like it or not, we do have a duty to others that share this world with us.

Is the Argus going to apologise for spreading vaccine-denialist woo all these years?

Delilah has suffered purely as a result of other parents' selfishness - any child that catches measles and remains unscathed is a very lucky individual - we should all count our blessings that most people are sensible enough to weigh up the pros and cons and vaccinate their children.

My heart goes out to you and baby Delilah, this is every parents worst nightmare. Having a baby so poorly is a truly horrendous ordeal. My thoughts are with you and baby Delilah. My fingers are crossed that she makes a speedy recovery x

Let's hope the baby pulls through. She will almost certainly have contracted measles from a child old enough to have had MMR but who hadn't due to thoughtless and selfish parents. In areas with full MMR uptake, measles has been all but eradicated. But in areas with too many dippy-hippy parents there is a real risk of deafness and even death for young children because measles outbreaks will occur.
