Man undergoes facial surgery after being beaten by gang

A 36-year-old man has undergone facial reconstruction surgery after being beaten by a gang of youths.

At least four teenage boys are thought to have set upon the man who lives in a privately owned double decker bus in Lewes.

As a result of the attack on Sunday (July 8) the man suffered broken bones to his face and had to undergo maxiofacial surgery.

Detective Sergeant Julie Dow, from East Sussex CID, said: "Throughout Sunday evening police received calls from concerned residents about a group of rowdy youths seen drinking and hanging around a red VW car in Spring Gardens car park.

“At some time around 11.30pm the victim came out of his bus and confronted these youths, and was consequently attacked.

"We are investigating the circumstances that led up to the assault and would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity.”

Four local teenage boys have already been arrested on suspicion of assault, three of whom along with a 35-year-old man have also been arrested in connection with drug offences.

All five have been bailed for eight weeks pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information should call101 quoting serial 1560 of 8/7 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Poor man. Not only beaten up by rowdy thugs but also having neighbours who would rather pick up a phone than stand up and be counted.

I wonder how those youngsters would have reacted had they been faced by a united group of neighbours and not just a single man remonstrating with them.

So...... lets recap.

Detective Sergeant Julie Dow, from East Sussex CID, said: "Throughout Sunday evening police received calls from concerned residents about a group of rowdy youths seen drinking and hanging around a red VW car in Spring Gardens car park.

Man in Bus gets a bit cheesed off that he cannot get to sleep and that nobody has turned up to sort out the situation. So goes outside to address the situation himself (presumed)

Then..........

“At some time around 11.30pm the victim came out of his bus and confronted these youths, and was consequently attacked.

Poor chap....

Then!
"We are investigating the circumstances that led up to the assault and would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity.”

Sorry Sussex Police did you not just say you received calls complaining about this earlier that evening?

Then......

As a result of the attack on Sunday (July 8) the man suffered broken bones to his face and had to undergo maxiofacial surgery.

So GBH then, quite a very serious offence.

And just to finish it all off nicely for the victim and all of us, we read (as always).....

All five have been bailed for eight weeks.

Sorry or is it just me that thinks something is wrong here?

Not suggesting that the arrested were involved but it all links in nicely. I also recognise that SP are busy but surely they should take some responsibility for this incident for not responding earlier?

Had they dispersed this crowd earlier, this might not have happened?

And maybe if all those people who called had instead joined forces and told these lads to clear off it wouldn't have come to GBH and some louts out on 8 weeks bail.

We all have a responsibility for what happens in our streets. They are our streets when all is said and done.

Or another shocking failure by us ... these so called concerned residents.

Who was it that told us that all that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing? Ah yes, Edmund Burke ... well it isn't exactly what he said. What he actually wrote was "when bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." but it comes down to the same thing.

Nothing wrong with wanting correct spelling of words!

Perhaps it's pedantry, but I think a newspaper should be able to report things accurately, especially when the headline is that the poor victim had facial surgery. 'Maxiofacial' doesn't exist. It's like saying someone had 'Open-Art Surgery' or 'Flidney Dialysis'.

Mayhap ... what matters that we stood by and watched a man beaten up by a gang of thugs as long as we spell the medical procedure he has to undergo as a consequence correctly.
