Five people charged over Brighton Smash EDO protest

Five people have been charged with failing to leave an area where police banned demonstrating at a Smash EDO protest on Monday.

Chris Osmond, 32, who police described as “of no known address”, Lisa Butler, 32, of Howard Road, Brighton, Chris Dyer, 46, from Durrington Gardens, Goring, Worthing, Dee Murphy, 57, of Brooklands Terrace, Swansea, Jessica Nero, 35, from Graham Road, Mitcham, Surrey, were all charged with breaching an order issued under Section 14 of the Public Order Act.

The law was used to confine a demonstration by anti-arms group Smash EDO to an area of Home Farm Road some distance away from the factory it campaigns to close down.

They are due to appear in court on August 3.

A 37-year-old Hove man arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway, a 61-year-old London man arrested on suspicion of a breach of the peace and breaching the Public Order Act, and a 22-year-old Brighton man arrested on suspicion of breaching the Public Order Act, have been bailed without charge until August 21.

No further action is being taken against a 19-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of breaching bail conditions, and a tenth arrestee who was released on Monday.

Amazing originality. It's always good to see the low quality of comments on the Argus from those who support the arms trade.

Interesting that only one is from Brighton.

If they wish to protest and they are being allowed to, why don't they comply and protest where requested?

Just because someone gives an address doesn't mean it is their permanent residence. It only needs to be an address at which someone can be reliably contacted.

Typical disinformation from a Smashedo supporter, everytime arrests are made the majority of those arrested on Smashedo protests come from outside of Brighton, which means their claim on their website that their movement is formed of Brightonians is just another lie from the Smashedo lie factory. Remind me again, your right to protest is sacred but you have the right to stop other people from protesting by using violence, your hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me.
By the way Gaz tell me when you make your lists of what I say on the internet, do you use green ink? Do you wear a little tin foil hat so that "the man" can't read your thoughts?

Oh please Gaz, you know as well as the rest of us that hardly any of the SmahEDO protesters are from Brighton.

Nice try though.

Given it is Sussex police investigating, if as you imply most the demonstrators are local would it be more convenient for both parties to give a local address ? Do all these Smash EDO supporters have multiple properties or something ? My they must be doing well. Alternatively most Smash EDO are rent-a-mob from outside the area.

Yep, the buses you see bringing them in from out of town always give it away!! This is the reason they're so unapologetic for the mess the leave behind, because well..they've left it behind when they drive back home on the A23. They're no more from Brighton than the average weekend tripper from London (who at least don't smash up our streets when they're here!).

Green Ink, Tin foil hat. Ho ho ho. Too funny.

I sure you enjoyed your childish little insults but do you really think that anyone is so interested in any of the drivel you come out with on the Internet that I'd want to write it down in any colour?

Most of your nonsense tends to be the same two or three lies so I think most can remember without resorting to lists. Though I can understand that some "contributors" on here might struggle.
