MP in bid to save former Hove bathhouse

HISTORIC: Medina House HISTORIC: Medina House

A campaign to safeguard an iconic former bathhouse has been backed by an MP.

Mike Weatherley has signed a petition calling for Brighton and Hove City Council to produce a planning brief for Medina House, in Hove.

The owners of the building were recently given a council order to carry out external renovation work, but now residents have called for protection to help preserve the Royal Doulton tiling on the interior of the building.

The petition was filed by campaign group saveHOVE in a bid to protect the building from redevelopment.

Mr Weatherley, the MP for Hove, said: “Action is well overdue.

“For too long Brighton and Hove City Council has dragged its feet over Medina House.

“I have been campaigning for some time now for a coordinated approach, first to evict the squatters and then to address the future of the historic building.

“My colleague, councillor Andrew Wealls, has been on the case too and is leading the fight locally. I urge anybody who cares about the building to sign as soon as possible.”

Maybe the neighbours don't want it knocked down and a brand new state of the Art building in its place.I mean who will get to see these all so exotic Doulton Tiles? As a Brighton Architect said in a posting You can't save everything.Which was in reference to the Art Deco Building which was once the Astoria Cinema.

Probably best to dismantle the tiling and put it somewhere else. Nothing special about the rest of the building.

used to be a manufaturing jewelery shop, plenty of room there to demolish and put up a skyscraper for all the low income people in the town, with a nice sea view, good idea.
