Delays on Brighton to Bedford line after cable theft

Rail passengers are facing delays today (July 26) after thieves stole cable from a main line last night.

First Capital Connect said customers were facing 90 minute delays on lines from Brighton to Bedford after the theft led to signalling problems.

The Bedford problem also hit passengers travelling with the Southeastern train company.

It adds to a difficult time for transport bosses, as they deal with the increased usage due to the Olympics and sweltering heat.

Yesterday saw many of Brighton and Hove Bus Company ’s services struggle to deal with the increase in numbers as tourists flocked to the coast to enjoy the sunshine.

If they can put alarms on Scaffolding why is it that Network Rail do not have alarms that trigger when this happens?
I find it hard to believe that Tourists would cause shortages they walk from the Station to the Seafront.Maybe it is local people from the suburbs who have realised with the extortionate parking charges and lack of space it is cheaper and easier to catch a Bus.That is why a Shuttle service throughout the Centre is becoming essential. Please could somebody from the Argus ask Mr French why there isn't this Facility.

Completely unacceptable. FCC should face severe penalties for this.

When railways first appeared around 1830 A.D. there were various people against the railways who commited acts of sabotage. They were dealt with in the courts, and sentenced to death.
Anyone deliberatly interfering with railway signalling should face the penalties today. Even if it only means a "life" sentence, let out after a few years.

FCC aren't responsible for the signals, Network Rail is. Minimum sentence of twenty years for public endangerment might cull a few of the low lifes though.
