Birdsong and bells could be played to queuing clubbers in a bid to reduce late-night trouble.

Those waiting to get into venues such as Oceana, Wahoo and Hed Kandi would listen to the ambient sounds to prevent problems if a new scheme was rolled out.

The scheme, Come Together: West Street Story, has been put forward by the Noise Abatement Society, which is trying to reduce the impact of noise in the Brighton and Hove.

The Brighton-based organisation ran a pilot last year during White Night, which experimented with different ways to reduce noise issues in West Street at the weekends.

It has now published its results in an academic paper and is recommending playing ambient sounds to queues to keep them calm.

The pilot saw Martyn Ware, one of the founders of the band The Human League, play different ambient noises through two rows of speakers on either side of the road which created a “sound cube” which people walked through.

The results showed clubbers laughing, hugging and dancing spontaneously instead of the “normal tensions and aggressions”.

It proved so successful police were confidently able to divert officers elsewhere on the night.

In the paper it suggests a series of speakers along West Road to create separate 3D soundscapes on either side to “positively impact queues”.

The society said the scheme needed further testing and funding but the premise has been backed by the council.

Brighton & Hove City Councillor Ben Duncan , lead member for community resilience and chairman of the community safety forum, said: “I am delighted that the ‘Soundscape’ experimental pilot along West Street during last year’s White Night was so successful.

“Discussion and analysis after the night was extremely positive and the council would support further projects along these lines to manage noise and create public well-being with the support of police and club owners should funding become available.

If the birdsong doesn't work, the Argus has come up with some songs that might help - and we're sure you can do better:
