A huge chunk of masonry fell from a building this morning.

Witnesses said the piece could have killed someone but thankfully no one was hurt.

The masonry fell from Mitre House in Western Road, Brighton at about 5am today.

A resident said: “I heard a massive sound and thought what on earth was that?

“When I looked out there was a massive bit of the building on the floor.

“Someone would have been killed had it been a Saturday night.

“It was quite shocking.

“All of sudden the fire engines were here with flashing blue lights.”

Fire crews closed the road off for several hours as they inspected the building and ensured it was safe.

How can it be safe if pieces of it are falling off. Those Scientologists have a lot to answer for.

The best bit is no one was killed or injured.

People and businesses in this building should be taking better care of it and hopefully will now be made to.

Hasn't Mitre House been putting forward planning proposals over the past year or so?

I think planning permision was given a year or so back for another 2 or 3 floors to be added!

My Mum lived there with her parents as a child, and her own Mum had a fashion business there. Her Dad sold the flat in about 1967.

Looks like the block is as frail as my Mum nowadays!

It is such a shame that such a beautiful and historic building a perfect example of art deco design at its finest has been left to become a crumbling mess , windows all crooked rusting and bent with shattered and broken glass about to fall onto the street also ! Masonry that is clearly unsafe and pieces of wayward metal hanging from the entrance Yet the owners have the nerve to ask for planning permission to extend when they cannot even look after what they already have ! I am told the insides are also run down tatty carpets in need of decor and hallway windows smashed beautiful marble walls in lobby stained and dirty and all origial deco fittings replaced with cheap office strip lighting ! What an absolute tragedy !! So glad no one was killed from this with it being in the early hours If it were just hours later Western Rd would be packed with shoppers and no doubt someone seriously hurt or killed ! unthinkable
