Mermaid attacked during Hastings pram race

A mermaid was assaulted during a pram race in Hastings, witnessed by dalmations, crayons and a bearded lady.

The 22-year-old woman was hit on the back of the head by an unknown object in All Saints Street, Hastings, during the Old Town Pram Race at about 9.30pm on Wednesday.

The event, in which decorated prams are pushed on a crawl of pubs and clubs, is held as part of Old Town Week, to raise money for local charities.

Sergeant Che Donald said: "The victim has stated that there were other groups of people in the area at the time of the assault. It is thought that perhaps the group dressed as dalmatians, crayons and a bearded lady may have witnessed this incident.

"If you were there and can help call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0697 of 2/8. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The victim suffered concussion and was treated by her own GP.

Anyone who saw the attack is asked to call Sussex Police on 101.

Maybe someone was trying to check if she was a real mermaid. Recently an article in a national paper spoke of a US Dept Home Affairs or something similar) having to put out a statement that mermaids were not real because they were getting callers asking where they could be viewid in their natural habitat!!

Is Ben Parsons a Sussex lad? Methinks this article was written in Southampton. The Old Town Pram Race was held on Wednesday mate, as it always is, not Saturday. Oh for a proper local paper...

The Argus missed another better headline: "Mermaid Battered during Hastings Pram Race" haha!

Was it a pram race or a pub crawl?

He lives and works in Brighton Dave.

Not sure how the error in the story happened, but it's now been fixed, and more details added as an official police appeal has now been issued.

The fact you are not sure is a little perturbing! Also it is nice to see that the Argus AND the police take this matter so seriously......

Thanks for the reply Jo. Ah well, we all make mistakes.

I appreciate this was an unpleasant experience for the lady concerned. However I makes me fed up that the only story about Old Town week in Hastings is a negative one.

Hastings has many great events, that are not only a wonderful spectacle, but also raise thousands of pounds for charity. Unfortunately the Argus seems to ignore the many positive aspects of Hastings.
