Fastest motorists caught on Sussex roads

Two of the fastest motorists in the country were caught speeding in Sussex.

The cases were ranked first and fifth respectively in a list of the top speeds logged by police forces in the last year.

The highest in the country was a rider stopped while travelling at 152mph on his Yamaha motorbike on the A27 at Binstead – more than double the national speed limit.

Steven Tull, 36, of Pennells Close, Liphook, Hampshire, is due to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on October 29 charged with dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, speeding and driving without a valid test certificate.

The second highest speed recorded in Sussex involved a driver caught on the A27 near Chichester travelling at 134mph.

The figures emerged from Freedom of Information requests made to police forces by insurance company LV.

The company found that A roads accounted for seven of the top 10 speeding cases.

Even if high-speed driving does not end with a crash, if convicted, it can lead to lengthy driving bans, fines of up to £2,500, increased insurance and possible prison sentences.

A spokesman for the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership said the partnership was concerned about excessive speeds throughout the counties - whether they were on major routes such as the A27 or through towns and villages.

WOW! They easily pipped those two Police Officers racing each other in their Police Cars that were caught by the undercover Biker Cop... they were only at 98 and 106 mph.

Next thing someone will suggest putting traffic calming devices on the A27? I'm surprised the road was clear enough to get up to those speeds.

I once did 100mph on the M23 on the straight bit just north of Gatwick; just for the experience. But that sort of speed is only safe when you have a dedicated path, like a train or aircraft.
Typical safe speeds in Sussex are around 50 on most main roads, and 70 on parts of the A27 and A23. No more, due to traffic.
It's amazing that even the little Japanese shopping baskets can go well over the legal limit these days.
The car must be looked upon as just another domestic appliance, to be used sensibly.

Actually they are not two of the fastest motorists as I know several people who have driven faster.

If the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership was really concerned about speed and safety, they would long ago have responded and done something about the frequent 50mph+ on the Old Shoreham Road between Neville Road and Goldstone Crescent early morning and late evenings. It is 30mph zone but 60+ happens often at weekends and that excludes emergency vehicles!

I hope the biker is treated leniently. You can safely do 150+ when road conditions allow, I've done it myself many times on the A27. So long as he's not endangered other road users I don't see what the problem is. If the A27 was in Germany, sections of it would be unrestricted speed anyway. It's not a big deal, once you get used to going fast, it becomes normal.

With you on this one, however if the test cert is invalid there could be an issue. Personally done 155 a few times in my M3 and still probably way safer than many of the slower drivers

I love driving fast where the road conditions allow... long straight lines with no other road users, 100% visibility and never in the wet.
Always bare in mind the possibility of a blowout though..

Agree 100%, if we all chose what laws to obey and what laws not to obey the country would be in chaos, I wonder if any of the so-called "good drivers" that think they are safe at those speeds have ever taken a advance driving test..... just a bunch of idiots that think they can drive fast until the day they hit something.

If you need to go that fast go on a track. Or try Greece. At least you will get a little shrine on the side of the road marking where you died, or what is more likely killed someone else. Five years and a life ban seems fair for them both.

I think you are over cooking the penalty. Most of the dangerous drivers I encounter are those going too slow and forcing sensible drivers to overtake, its those people who should be fined!

Yeah exactly. Most A roads you cand drive at 60-70 safely. A lot of people insist on doing 40 or less and that makes me and others want to overtake quite often!

As for the M23, there is a really clear part just north of Crawley where it really opens up and when it's clear you can comfortably do 100-120 safely if conditions and traffic permit. I think that and parts of the A27 should be de-restricted from 11pm to 5am. they are usually completely empty!!

While people may feel competent to drive at speed, it does nothing to change the fact that if you have an accident at high speed the chances of survival for the people involved are dramatically reduced.

All road users they have other lives in theirs hands, not just their own!

I don't speed, but i do drive at the speed limit and according to the road conditions, and I don't drink drive - the reason - I couldn't live with myself if I hurt/killed someone. I could still do it driving within the speed limit obviously, but I'd like to think I'm reducing the risk to others!

How about we divide the road system into two then. One for people who want to get there with their family in the car still alive and the other roads for people willing to roll the dice and maybe not arrive at all. It must be really hard sometimes leaving the house looking at your kids knowing that this might be the day your luck runs out and the kids get no dad coming through the front door. Sad. Of course you could survive and just kill someone elses kids instead, how lucky would that be...

Why is Sussex Police only providing this information under FOI?! They should be naming these speeding idiuots in a news release and letting everyone know. At least their names are out there now. I suppose the 36-year-old from Hampshire still thinks he's a teenager. He's an idiot. Speed kills. Period.
