Brighton pub's 'play for a pint' offer

A pub is asking people to play for a pint while giving them the opportunity to be on the radio.

The Cobblers Thumb in New England Road, Brighton, will give all performers at their Thursday night open mic night a free pint.

And all performances will be broadcast live on Analogue Underground Radio.

The open mic night starts from 8.30pm and costs nothing to perform.

A con. All musicians boycott pubs that expect you to play for nothing. This scam is taking over. Never, ever, pay without being paid.

...or pay without being played.

Pass the vodka.

It's an open mic night, not the Brixton Academy. I'm sure plenty will be pleased with the pint deal given that many performers are happy to play these things for free just to build up experience.

I regularly play gigs for money but I also go to a jam night where I have fun but don't expect to get anything in return. You only play 2 or 3 numbers - do you think the pub should pay everyone that turns up and does this ?

I think the Cobblers is to be commended although I'm not likely to tune in to listen to it.

Is there a sign in the pub that says "No free pint for playing John cage's 4 minutes and 33 seconds"?
If not they may have solved the street-drinkers problem.

Just a variation on 'singing for your supper'. Shame all those teetotal buskers will not be able to take advantage of this one ;)

Hi there i actgually run this night , im giving people artists the chance to have them play to people and live on the radio , i have had many bands play for me on my radio and all have been satisfied , if the goverment did not tax everything to the hilt including dring then everybody would get paid , i usually do not get any money from this night , Its not a scam , the only scam is your attitude toward people trying to make life easier and more open for the general public to be involved
