Crowborough fraudster impersonated brother-in-law to claim £80,000 in loans

A man who admitted impersonating his vulnerable brother-in-law in order to claim £80,000 in fraudulent loans has avoided jail.

Gerald Cattell, 74, of Fermor Road, Crowborough, pleaded guilty to three counts of forgery by applying for loans in the name of his victim in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

He also admitted a charge of obtaining a loan by deception, using a credit card fraudulently obtained in 2008, obtaining a money transfer by deception and a count of fraud by false representation to obtain a £30,000 mortgage.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years, a 12 months supervision order and ordered to pay £200 court costs when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday.

After the case Detective Constable Emma Flint said: "This was a truly despicable crime with no reason or excuse, it was just pure greed."

While I don't really agree with locking 70somethings up, it would be nice to know what happened to the money and how much, if any, was recovered.

And why is his brother in law "vulnerable"- what is the angle here?

Okay £200.00 court costs, a suspended sentence and what ... Was this author of a despicable crime at least required to compensate his vulnerable brother in law? And what about the £30.000.- mortgage?

I knew a person who had Cerebal Palsy and His so called carer took out cards in His name and then used them to pay for his own Wedding and Honeymoon.I would imagine it would all be claimed on insurance by the Card company.People get inundated with applications for credit through the post.I am not saying the person was not to blame but cards should be signed in front of a member of the said Companies Staff.

greed seems to pay He got away with it, the balance of £79,800 comes to mind after deducting £200 court costs.
]the morgage might help with recovery of proceeds of crime, but i do not hold my breath.
