A man who admitted impersonating his vulnerable brother-in-law in order to claim £80,000 in fraudulent loans has avoided jail.
Gerald Cattell, 74, of Fermor Road, Crowborough, pleaded guilty to three counts of forgery by applying for loans in the name of his victim in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
He also admitted a charge of obtaining a loan by deception, using a credit card fraudulently obtained in 2008, obtaining a money transfer by deception and a count of fraud by false representation
to obtain a £30,000 mortgage.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years, a 12 months supervision order and ordered to pay £200 court costs when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday.
After the case Detective Constable Emma Flint said: "This was a truly despicable crime with no reason or excuse, it was just pure greed."
