Chickens die in fire at school

A school’s flock of chickens has been decimated by a fire.

More than half of the chickens kept at Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Chalkland Rise, Woodingdean had been killed after a fire broke out in their coup last night.

Firefighters from Roedean were called to the school at about 10.30pm and said they had recovered the bodies of at least ten chickens.

It is now thought that the fire spread from an incinerator in a neighbour's gardens and not from a fire on the school grounds as previously reported.

Well done our emergency services.

It would be nice if the fire brigade had time to set up a high pressure
water cannon to hose down a few of the oiks burning chickens on the beach with disposable barbecues.

What a terribly sad tragedy to happen - there are going to be a lot of children very upset over losing their "pets" as chickens have personalitys.

Why wasn't this fire properly put out? It should have been - if the chicken coop was set on fire, houses nearby were also in danger. The person responsible should have checked into this first. Let's hope this person isn't given any other tasks that need responsibility as I'd hate to learn they've caused any more deaths in the future.

Getthiscoalitionout, I think David Cameron may be preparing to interupt Songs of Praise with a short message about the chickens.

He will probably be covering the usual...that lessons have been learnt, that every chicken counts, and deserves the educational opportunities to suck seed. The right for chickens to buy their own coop is the only way to get foxes to invest in the future of chickens etc.
It's not as bad as you think.

Fire broke out in their coup! Surely it's coop? Back to school for the Argus reporters!

Did the firefighters "recover" the bodies of the chickens along with a tasty BBQ sauce and a couple of beers each? I think we should be told!

the fire started in an adjasent garden and not in the school. In total 11 chickens died and 2 survived but a further 2 birds and one cockeral where missing and not found. Pos, taken by fox after fire

Perhaps they were thinking of a coup de grace.

'Hilarious' jokes about roast chicken aside, the fact remains animals have suffered and died, possibly at the hand(s) of a human being.

The fire started in a garden in Crescent Drive South, Woodingdean, Brighton. The idiots that live there went to bed leaving their garden incinerator still burning. It set fire to the fences, trees and the chicken coop at the school. These people should be named and shamed - it's not the first time it's happened!!! They should have their incinerator taken away and be fined for the damaged caused and the death of the chickens.

I am sure all you people making jokes about this are having a great laugh.
I am a parent from the school and know how upset the kids will be when they find out. They take it in turns looking after them and holding them. Each have turns in taking eggs home. It is a great way for kids to learn how to look after animals especially those kids who do not have pets. Personally I think the Neighbour who caused this fire should be charged for reckless endangerment. This could have spread to someone else's home as well of destroying the schools flock of chickens! They should be ashamed of themselves!

It was a neighbour of the school that backs onto the grounds. The kids and the school take their responsibility very seriously.

This tragic event will be devastating to our pupils who, as Tracy D says, take turns in looking after the chicken and sharing the fun and enjoyment that comes with responsible chicken keeping. I have visited the school today and it is shocking to see where the coop once stood. The fire did not start in any part of the school grounds.

I live in the immediate area, and what Dawnie112 said is true....And for all you stupid people making jokes..you're just not funny, you're pathetic. Those poor chickens died a terrible death, and suffered..They couldn't get out of their coop, so put yourself in that position! I was upset about the chickens, as were other neighbouring households. The schools area where the chickens were kept had been adapted to encourage wildlife, and was very pretty, so it is all very sad.
I also agree with Tracy D in that this neighbour should be charged, as who in their right mind lights an incinerator right next to a fence, then leaves it without making sure it is extinguished. And all of this is even worse as they knew chickens were kept behind said fence! The stupidity of this neighbour has caused not only damage, but also so much upset to many, and had this fire got out of control many other properties, including mine could have also been damaged.
