Crawley hospital on fire

UPDATE: Hundreds of patients, doctors and nurses had to be evacuated when a fire broke out at a hospital.

Fire crews were called to Crawley Hospital at 1.35pm today after reports of a blaze in a sixth-floor store room.

Ten fire engines from across Sussex rushed to the building in West Green Drive, where smoke was pouring from a window.

The whole building was evacuated apart from the operating theatre on the third floor.

Streets outside the hospital were crammed with patients in wheelchairs alongside doctors and nurses in full medical gear.

By 4pm firefighters were helping the evacuated people back inside the building.

An NHS spokeswoman said: “Our priority in circumstances like this is the safety of our patients and the staff that work at the hospital, and so we worked quickly to ensure everyone was safe and being supported.

“The majority of services were resumed, and we are working to ensure that any disruption to patients is kept to a minimum.”

before anyone say I know I am sick of whingers but this says "breaking news" at 2.55 it is now 23.55 by my calculations 9 hours later and the more to follow has not followed. Get a grip Argus, Crawley news is not that interesting in the first place but if you report it, at least folow up with bit of detail if you promise it. Not exacty the rolling 24 hour news we here about, more like here is a bit of a headline from 25 miles away can't be bothered to folow it up or is your website running slow from all the annoying adverts that populate it?

You should be an Argus reporter, your bad spelling and grammatical errors are exactly the attributes they look for in a journalist!

The news is slow to update as the hamsters running the servers are on their summer break.

What a stupid headline? Crawley Hospital was NOT "on fire." There was a fire at the hospital. Different.

Crawley news items may be of no interest to you, but some of us live there.
Despite the beliefs of many in Sussex, most of us are literate too.
The paper sells across Sussex, it isn't just a Brighton newspaper.

Nobody LIVES in Crawley: people merely EXIST there.
