Showers remain shut at Hove leisure centre
6:50pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in News
Showers at a leisure centre will stay shut for the foreseeable future following a Legionnaires scare.
The dry side showers at the King Alfred, on Hove seafront, were closed earlier this month following the discovery of the bacteria that can cause the disease.
Freedom Leisure, which runs the centre for Brighton and Hove City Council , had hoped to reopen the showers last week but must wait until staff are confident water supplies are up to standard.
In a joint statement the company said: “After rigorous testing of the dry side showers at the King Alfred leisure centre, they will remain closed as a precautionary measure until Freedom Leisure and Brighton and Hove City Council are completely satisfied with the water quality and subsequent readings.
“Freedom Leisure has robust and stringent health and safety systems in place to protect the public.
“All other facilities at the centre, including alternative showers, remain open as usual.”
There have been no reports that anyone has fallen ill following the discovery of the legionella bacteria and the low levels are said to not pose a public health risk.

This is embarrassing! We have just hosted the Olympic Games in London and In a neighbouring city the sports complex is unfit for even showering in! Why cant we just get on and build a state of the art new sports complex either for King Alfred site or Black Rock? We need good facilities if we want to continue this 'Legacy' that everyone keeps banging on about. Come on Brighton Council sort yourselves out!
