Call for action on faulty lifts by Brighton MP

An MP has lobbied council chiefs to replace lifts in a high-rise council block.

In September Brighton and Hove City Council announced about 90 1960s and 1970s lifts in 50 buildings would be upgraded as part of |a nine-year programme.

However, Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby , has written to the local authority’s chief executive calling for the replacement of the equipment in Leach Court, off Edward Street, Brighton, to be brought forward.

It is currently scheduled to take place at some point in the next three years.

Mr Kirby said: “Elderly residents tell me they feel like prisoners in their own homes when the lifts are out of action, which is sadly an all too familiar occurrence for those living in the block.

“One recent failure lasted for six weeks.

“This situation cannot continue for three more years and that is why I am calling on the council to act swiftly to resolve this issue.”

Although I don't like Tories I applaud Mr Kirby for actually caring about Brighton residents, unlike you know who who doesn't are a jot about anyone other than agitators.

You say you don't like Tories, but Simon Kirby MP works very hard for all his constituents whether they voted for him or not. As do all our Tory MPs & Tory Councillors, as you say not sure about the other Party's representatives where political dogma gets in the way of what they were elected to do.

Thanks alison, prob overkill to say i dont like all tories, just some of their rabid members!! I liked Mary Mears though, she was always available round her market stall to talk to people, in years gone by Joyce Edmond Smith labour councillor was alwys riding on her bike round her area talking to people. Greens arent seen from one election to the next, they just do not care about people unless you glue yourself to Barclays or bring your 4 by 4 and caravan onto parklands then they fall over themselves to ingratiate with you.

I think NickBrt must have been refering to your Mr Weatherly who has been busily and dogmatically encouraging a law to criminalise all squatters.

As usual you do talk some nonsense. Seen my local councillors quite a few times my MP occasionally and I saw the Green MEP Keith Taylor in the street the other day. Suprised to see the latter two as they busily represent us elsewhere. Sounds like you need to get out of the house more.

I don't know why you and the other moaners are so against a progressive local party. You all seem determined to lumber us with the other moribund parties. Don't like change I suppose.

But why haven't the local Councillors (Green I believe) done something about this?

Why has nobody thought to install lifts powered by hot air? Seems an obvious solution.

The council are replacing all the lifts. Doing these sooner would mean other lifts are done later. Which means other people would be stuck with ageing, unreliable lifts.

Dear HJJarrs My point isnt that the local and wider politicians arent occasionally in brighton but they never engage with PEOPLE, unless we count you of course, with your sarcastic utterings against anyone who doesnt think like the saintly jason ben caroline or hj. Other people CAN have another view you know, that's freedom and democracy. greens shold give that a go.

My understanding is that MPs have no say in council affairs. All he can do is write to the council. The sad aspect of this is that our MP is involved at all. It just points to the poor quality of local councillors who are useless whatever party they represent. I agree with those who support Mr Kirby. He works hard for the constituency.

Mr Kirby is simply getting a headline - as the article says, all the lifts are being replaced, but that takes time - and there needs to be prioritisation. The ones in tower blocks being the most obvious - if they break down, then 30 floors are isolated, not 6.
And the best MP's are those who get on with the work, with no publicity - Caroline Lucas has helped a lot of people I know, with no fuss - and, by the way, I am not a Green voter (might be, if the childish attacks on them continue!).
